About this deal

A prey's proximity to the trap entrance triggers a valve trapdoor to open into a hollow bladder, creating suction that then flushes the prey inside. The Butterworts: You can find Butterworts ( Pinguicula) throughout the Northern Hemisphere, with the highest concentration being found in Mexico and Central America. The intense colouration of trapping organs can give the impression that they are flowers when they are, in fact, ingeniously adapted leaves. Their tiny traps grow up to one centimetre in length and capture prey including mosquito larvae, small fish and tadpoles.

Plants can be repotted if they get too large for their container, and some can be divided to create several new plants. Our Carnivorous Plant Compost can be used as Venus Flytrap Soil, Pitcher Plant Soil, and Sundew Soil. If you're growing lots of plants, you could try releasing the predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis on to your plants. You will need small plastic bags like this or snack size ziploc bags for refrigerator stratification. The nutrient poor soils to which the carnivorous plants have adapted are often rich in peat and sand. They also germinate faster than either of the previous two options, making them particularly great for kids. They are also known as flypaper traps, on account of the sticky leaves they use to catch gnats and fruit flies. However, unlike other garden perennials, they must be planted into compost that is specially formulated for carnivorous plants (see above), rather than soil or potting compost. The RHS collaborates with industry and specialist growers, of which some have demonstrated long-term (30 years) consistent results growing carnivorous plants without peat.

This includes plants that are fully aquatic to ones that live in deserts, plants that live in rain forests, fog forests, temperate forests, bogs, fens, swamps, grasslands, lakes, streams, and on and on. Nepenthes - also known as ‘Monkey cups’ or ‘Monkey jars’ - require slightly different conditions than their bog-dwelling cousins. The pitcher plants, clockwise from top left: Sarracenia, Heliamphora, Nepenthes, Cephalotus, Darlingtonia. Carnivorous plants have a range of different mechanisms for catching prey, from tall trumpet-like pitchers, to rounded cups and traps that snap shut, to glistening sticky leaves. Dormancy: Not required, though your plant may slow down or stop growing depending on the light levels.I also recommend filling up the pitchers half-way with distilled water when you first receive your plant.
