About this deal

I'm almost finished making my version of his "Frothy Table Cover" which is made of cotton in a combination of floral pastels cut into triangles. Adjectives like “delicious”, “voluptuous”, “fresh”, “juicy”, and “passionate” were liberally sprinkled in his vocabulary and rolled off his tongue easily. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Well worth the money, even if you only look at the book and don't actually make any of the designs - I was inspired! KAFFE FASSETT, renowned for his colorwork, shares his vision of craft in frequent lecture tours, exhibitions, and television appearances.

He was christened Frank Havrah Fassett but as a teenager decided to change his name to the more artistic sounding Kaffe (rhymes with safe) after an Egyptian character in a children’s book. The designs and his unrestrained use of color were so unique and different – he wasn’t knitting – he was painting with wool.By the end of the class, everyone had a basic layout designed for their quilt that they were pleased with, though maybe not all the blocks were cut or put up. Since 1999, Glorious Color has specialized in the quilt fabric and books created by Kaffe Fassett and Liza Prior Lucy. The high level of intensity and energy that he maintained all day despite having passed the age of 80 was incredible. Not long ago, I was in Dubai to check out the biannual Dubai International Quilt Show which I was covering for an article in Quiltmania magazine.

Throughout the day, Kaffe and his partner Brandon Mabley gently guided the students along, making suggestions on color choices as each row developed. During those years, Kaffe’s design world also expanded to encompass needlepoint patterns, mosaics, fabric designs and quilt patterns. In addition to the main quilts, there are ideas for smaller, accompanying items, such as curtains, cushions and even tablecloths, so that you can develop the patchwork theme within an interior - as well as enjoying smaller projects which can be treated in no time at all. Kaffe Fassett puts a new spin on some of the traditional quilt patterns and his creations are fresh and original. Mark's in Venice, one that uses all flowered fabrics that seem to come from old-fasioned tea cups (without ever looking frumpy or frilly) and my favorite, one that uses all variety of greens to create a glowing emerald garden quilt. When I first skimmed the book I was thrilled because I realized that I DO have a way to work through my huge fabric collection-- especially fabrics I was worried I would never use because they didn't quite "fit" the kinds of patterns I had in mind.

He eventually discovered that he had a greater passion for textile design which is where his successful career ultimately took him.Where we might just say shades of red, to him it was “flaming red”, or “pungent blue”, or “mustard green”. I remember the first time I saw those patterns in his classic book Glorious Knits – I was mesmerized. While some of his color combinations and business of the quilt tops could be offensive to some, I think that one has to see the brilliance of his work. Divided into five color themes--ranging from soft pastels and leafy gardens to bold circus hues--these stunning designs bear Kaffe's unmistakable stamp.
