About this deal

Even major names like United, JetBlue, Southwest, easyJet and Ryanair frequently ask passengers to gate check their bag if they run out of cabin space.

For example, some airlines have ridiculously low carry-on allowances, especially in terms of the weight requirement. In this post I wanted to talk a bit more about that, and also share some tips for avoiding having to gate check your bag.

However, sometimes when flying certain regional jets you may have to wait on the jet bridge at the destination gate after you deplane to get your bag. We have compact bags specific for gate checking, as well as durable, padded bags for checking your gear as luggage. It's just a case of a boarding gate staff member putting a tag in on your bag and giving it to a baggage handler to put in the cargo hold.

If so - (since I've never done this before) will the bags be put in the regular luggage hold (assume so) and we'll collect them in FRA at the baggage carousel. A single 15kg bag in a bin is less likely to fall on a passenger than one of many packed haphazardly into a bin. Bravo for not baggage-checking your car seat but if you have a lap baby, still try to use it on board if there's an extra seat, since you're taking it to the gate anyway. JL Childress brand Gate Check Travel Bags are designed to protect your prams, strollers and car seats from dirt, germs, scratches and damage, offering extra durability and added convenience to your travel either by air, train, car or bus! This may not be the reason for your issue, but passengers in the last boarding groups (as identified on your ticket) are often told they have to gate check their bag, even though there may be ample space in the overhead bins.Once [bags are] tagged, the checked bags are left at the end of the jetway where the ramp agent takes them directly downstairs and loads them into the aircraft bin where all of the checked bags travel," Delta told me.

Most passengers are only allowed one single item with a size limit smaller than usual (so that it can fit under a seat).

Not only will you need to part with your bag, but you'll need to figure out where to pick it up after you land.
