Wilhelm Kahlo sailed to Mexico in 1891 at the age of nineteen and, upon his arrival, changed his German forename, Wilhelm, to its Spanish equivalent, 'Guillermo'.

Kahlo was deeply ambivalent about having a child and had already undergone an abortion earlier in her marriage to Rivera. She and Rivera successfully petitioned the Mexican government to grant asylum to former Soviet leader Leon Trotsky and offered La Casa Azul for him and his wife Natalia Sedova as a residence. After the accident, Frida Kahlo turned her attention away from the study of medicine to begin a full-time painting career. Both continued having extramarital affairs; Kahlo, being bisexual, had affairs with both men and women, with evidence suggesting her male lovers were more important to Kahlo than her female lovers.

Kahlo holds the scissors with one hand menacingly close to her genitals, which can be interpreted as a threat to Rivera – whose frequent unfaithfulness infuriated her – and/or a threat to harm her own body like she has attacked her own hair, a sign of the way that women often project their fury against others onto themselves. Although their marriage was quite unhappy, Guillermo and Matilde had four daughters, with Frida being the third. With the aid of Marcel Duchamp, she was able to arrange for an exhibition at the Renou et Colle Gallery. She shied away from nothing, revealing – indeed, reveling in – the indignity of heartbreak, as well as the gut-wrenching pain of abortion and miscarriage. In My Grandparents and I, Kahlo painted herself as a ten-year old, holding a ribbon that grows from an ancient tree that bears the portraits of her grandparents and other ancestors while her left foot is a tree trunk growing out of the ground, reflecting Kahlo's view of humanity's unity with the earth and her own sense of unity with Mexico. Frida Kahlo's usual subject was herself, and her most intriguing work is an autobiography in paint: a series of compelling self-portraits that shows her urgent and evolving pursuit of self-awareness from 1926, when she began painting, to 1954, when she died at the age of forty-seven. i18331555 |b 1130001611643 |d pc |g - |m |h 27 |x 1 |t 0 |i 11 |j 2 |k 010630 |n 01-27-2023 01:15 |o - |a 759. Conger Goodyear, then the president of the MoMA, and Clare Boothe Luce, for whom she painted a portrait of Luce's friend, socialite Dorothy Hale, who had committed suicide by jumping from her apartment building.
