About this deal

The thin cardboard envelope the book was posted in had ripped and Royal Mail had to put it in one of their plastic envelopes. Self Promotion - it’s very refreshing to hear someone just straight up talk about how they had to promote themselves to get where they had got. And she seems to expend an unusual amount of energy launching unhelpful, self-aggrandising attacks on her own party, then complaining when people tell her to fuck off. I attended one of Caitlin Moran’s Live tour dates on June 28th where no other than Jess herself was discussing Moran’s new publication and various taboo issues with brilliant clarity and once again that trademark honesty. For her, politicians need to talk to the people in a simple language that they can understand and relate to.

Sensitive and funny, poignant and shocking, it gives a good insight into Jess- who she is and how she is, and of course, that wider world. LGBTQ people don't get even a token mention until near the end, and let's be honest if she cared that much about us she might have thought twice about all of her cosying up to Julie Burchill, who is an utterly vicious and outspoken transphobe.Jess Phillips is refreshing, her no-nonsense, straight-forward approach aims to open politics up to all and that can only be a good thing. At times, it is something of a depressing read, not least because you feel she's beating her head against a brick wall. And how did she make the writing so effortless it feels like we’re having a chat over a large Sauvignon? Just like some other books I’ve read, it feels a little presumptious to assume that the author is speaking on behalf of all women, we all have such different experiences that you can’t just generalise, but this one wasn’t as bad as some others.

This is not a theoretical treaty about feminism but it oozes the down to earth appeal of an MP who has long lived among the people she seeks to represent. I didn't think I agreed with her on lots of issues, and I still don't agree with her on some, but she's won me over in a big way. Brilliantly spaced between the chapter formats and her voice isn't lost like some in this structure are. Damian Barr’Everywoman has all the laughs [of Lena Dunham and Caitlin Moran] with a backbone of real glinting anger . To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.A great read from a politician I admire, albeit I disagree with her on so many (largely economic) issues. Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). This book focuses on violence against women, equality, sisterhood, motherhood, politics (especially British politics), and trolling.

I've admired Jess for a while, just because it's not every day a woman from the midlands is on the TV, never mind as an MP. She certainly doesn't just slam the Tories, I didn't read this as a Tory-hating book at all, more a book about inspiring change and making a difference in the world. Unguarded in her criticism of those she disagrees with, her anger at Jeremy Corbyn is clear – ‘while we’re fighting and struggling with a lackluster leadership, the people are the ones who’re suffering’. Her pride in being ‘normal’ is something she wears as a badge of honour, celebrating her Brummy accent, determined to carry on speaking in her own voice because ‘if we don’t start sounding like the public, ordinary people will disengage and we’ll be left with the Establishment holding court and we can’t have that!

Phillips is enormously appreciative of the women who came before her, feeling Harriet Harman passed on the baton when she warned “you will never be popular” — and is a big believer in the sisterhood. Yes, she wears her heart on her sleeve, in a working environment which doesn't really accept that sort of thing, and I respect her for it.
