About this deal

EVER AFTER is a stand-alone novel but re-introduces the characters of Tess and Gus who first appeared in my novel MISS YOU.

Italy comes alive in Eberlen's hands, London too' Fanny Blake'A wonderful read, funny, poignant and deeply satisfying' Emily Bell Love isn't always a fairytale . Eberlen weaves escape with a daydream-like quality, but at the same, infuses a sense of realness and raw emotion.Despite all that goes wrong - illness and family issues, it is obvious there is a deep love between the two main characters - Tess and Gus and that fate brought them together. This was a really beautiful story, and reminded me very much of star-crossed lovers, in the sense that Tess and Gus crossed paths on more than one occasion throughout lengthy periods of time. Laura Jane Williams***Tess and Gus are strangers when their lives collide one sun-drenched morning in Florence, but it feels as if fate has brought them together. Tess and Gus have crossed paths so many times in their lives but its not until 2013 that they finally speak.

Now despite the intoxicating Florence and Sicily settings which had me *this* close to booking a flight, this isn’t always an uplifting love story without heartache and tragedy - it’s complex and devastating at times (that ending 😭). Kate Eberlen grew up in a small town thirty miles from London and spent her childhood reading books and longing to escape. When my mother used to read me fairy tales, I think I always focused on the ‘ever after’ instead of the ‘happily’.You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. This summer, fall in love with EVER AFTER from the bestselling author of Miss You***Your favourite authors are loving Ever After:'Kate Eberlen has gone beyond the initial star crossed romance of Tess and Gus to explore the lasting nature of relationships with her characteristic sensitivity, perception and humour in this inspirational book' Martha Kearney'A captivating story about love. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. Alternating between the perspectives of Tess and Gus, the novel explores the conflicts and challenges of new love and old loyalties, passion and duty, logic and belief, with readers racing to find out if the couple can or can’t be together.

Despite all that goes wrong and the novel’s poignant portrayal of illness, family issues and class differences, there is such a clear love between the characters. I loved the complex family relationships which Kate explores so well, as well as loss and mental illness. But what I love about Gus and Tess’ story is that it is real and vulnerable, nothing is sugarcoated. I’m very much a big believer in things happening for a reason, and so it didn’t take long for me to assume that fate definitely had a part to play in the eventual meeting of these two characters. Eberlen makes the move from Mantle, which published her most recent book Only You in 2020 and won a seven-way auction for Miss You in 2015.Kate now lives on the south coast of England, but spends as much time as she can in Italy, a country she loves.

Publisher Sam Eades signed the two-book deal for world English rights with Mark Lucas at The Soho Agency. Kate Eberlen has gone beyond the initial star-crossed romance of Tess and Gus to explore the lasting nature of relationships with her characteristic sensitivity, perception and humour in this inspirational book.

Lucas is also handling translation and screen rights and US rights are being handled by Jessica Purdue at Orion Books. You know it’s a good novel when you have to immediately flick back to the beginning to reread some bits to help you process the ending, which is exactly what I had to do! I adored the scenery of Florence, adding even more of a colourful splash of magic to the story, and could easily picture myself alongside the characters as they strolled along sun-dappled pavements, considering their futures. If you love the dance competition, then we’ve got the perfect set of audiobooks for you to lose yourself in, from memoirs by the judges of the show – filled with brutal honesty and some startling revelations – to fiction set in the world of dance. But alas, here I am, having worked up the courage to do just that, and hoping that I make some sort of sense while doing so.
