About this deal

I've recently worked with Portland Gallery on Edward Seago, Towner on Peggy Angus and the Ingram Collection on three exhibitions, the most recent being 'Changing Times'. Hotjar sets this cookie to know whether a user is included in the data sampling defined by the site's daily session limit. It was one of their earliest published designs, drawn while they were still students at the Royal College of Art. There is about them the suggestion that you are looking in at a series of gay, old-fashioned parties from the matter-of-fact street in the present.

With the addition of text from Ravilious's friend, Jim Richards, what was produced was one of the most famous and iconic illustrated books of the twentieth century. Subsequently High Street has become one of the most highly-prized artist's books of its time, indeed so great is the demand for work by Eric Ravilious that damaged copies are often taken apart and the plates sold individually as prints. Sir James Richards (1907 - 92) was editor of the Architectural Review from 1937 to 1971 and architectural correspondent to The Times for over 20 years. His four-volume series 'Ravilious in Pictures' (Mainstone Press) celebrates the life and work of English designer, printmaker and watercolourist Eric Ravilious (1903-42), exploring the stories and characters concealed behind his mesmerizing paintings. We showcase the very best in British printmaking with limited edition prints from artists including Angie Lewin, Mark Hearld, Jonny Hannah, Christopher Brown and many more. Small bump to bottom corner of front cover, otherwise fine in fine card slipcase (apparently most copies were issued without the slipcase). Yet, as Richards makes clear, change was already altering the appearance of the high street when the book was published, and this is confirmed by an observant chronicler of London life in the mid 1930s, Thomas Burke. In this environment there was no reason for a retailer to specialise, hence the diversification noted by Burke, and the accompanying loss of distinctiveness.

The window display ' shows a diver working at the bottom of the sea, and several different kinds of helmet. Sir James Maude Richards (1907–1992) was editor of Architectural Review from 1937 to 1971 and architectural correspondent of The Times for more than twenty years. If you need one more excuse to own this book: At the time of publication, only 2000 copies were produced, and sadly the lithographic plates were destroyed during WWII. In this context the Mainstone Press is pleased to announce the publication of The Story of High Street.

there is probably no-one else who could have made these records at once so faithfully and imaginatively. Publisher's dark blue cloth, silver lettered to spine, pictorial title label to upper board, housed in matching slipcase. Ravilious’s lithographs are magnificent, but the book itself was poorly designed, its pinched margins cramping both text and lithographs. A very enjoyable book - beautifully produced and a fascinating snapshot of the high street as it was around the middle part of the Twentieth Century. Publication dates are subject to change (although this is an extremely uncommon occurrence overall).Eric Ravilious (1903–1942) was a painter, designer, illustrator and wood engraver, and he remains one of the best-known English artists of the 1930s.

Eric Ravilious (1903 - 42) was a painter, designer, illustrator and wood engraver and remains one of the best-known English artists of the 1930s. His works captures an England changing from the certainties of the early 20th century through to the upheavals and modernisation of the country as the Second World War broke out. If you have any question about this product or need to brainstorm how to compliment it with another feel free to reach out to us in the way that suits you most. Ravilious had initially proposed it to the Golden Cockerel Press, with whom he had previously worked, but they were unable to undertake such an ambitious project whereas Curwen's great interest in the area of lithography saw them subsidise the project. Happily Russell also discovered that two of the businesses are still trading from their original premises.

The logic of this attitude, played out over the subsequent decades, has brought us to a crisis point. First published in 1938, this classic book introduces the British High Street, only 2000 copies of the original book were printed before the lithographic plates were destroyed in the London Blitz.
