Biography: Johanna Basford is an illustrator and ink evangelist who creates intricate and hand-drawn illustrations rooted in the flora and fauna that surrounds her home in rural Scotland. I tried out my water-based fineliners and they didn’t bleed at all and only had the slightest hint of shadowing with very dark colours but I only noticed because I was closely inspecting it.

Daughter used a gold gel pen for some if the details on the owls chest to break it up a little, she spent a long time googling completed images of the eyes and beak because she didn’t know what would look best, owls have a very dark beak but my Daughter didn’t think a black or grey beak would like right. It would be a great shame if you’ve spent hours and hours and hours colouring in to perfection, to then have your colours fade after a few months on the wall. This journal is gorgeous and certainly the best I’ve seen and its gold-edged pages are a lovely addition.

The paper is a lovely creamy tone, which I think complements colours so much better than brighter white shades which beside your colours create too stark a contrast. No matter which way you open the book it lays flat, meaning you can colour right up to edges easily (all though not many images are printed right up the edge). Enchanted Forest was the first book of Johanna’s that I bought and it’s very special to me, no matter how many times I flick through it, it never loses it’s charm. It would have been nice to have some more of the single animals like the hedgehog in, but I’m happy with the choices.
