About this deal

Ellie doesn't want to as its just another move she can do without bit her mother insists as her father is going away to another job and she can’t look after her. I have even talked the head into a little revamp of the library so that we can display them properly!

The result of this constant upheaval is Ellie can’t make friends, isolating her and makes her sad, lonely and depressed. When she’s turned into a cat, we get to see Ellie for who she really is behind the sadness of missing her dad, while she’s given the chance to make some unusual new friends and ultimately find a place to belong. It’s a fantastic independent book seller that will actually be responsive and select appropriate books for you. Ellie is the rudest, most spoilt child her grandma has ever met and it’s time that she learnt a lesson! With the help of a brave mouse and a resourceful spider, Ellie succeeds in finding the ring, defeating the machinations of Jolly the cat and convincing her Grandma that she has learned her lesson. Now it’s her grandmother’s turn and Ellie is determined to be as rude and unhappy about the situation as a person can possibly be.

Ellis meets some interesting characters, spiders and rats, and manages to make friends with them and encourage them to help her complete a task set by her grandma. This experience has been fantastic primarily for the children, the school and also for me (professionally).

Ellie discovers the importance of kindness and friendship and the satisfying ending resolves the family problems that lead to her challenging behaviour. She has been described by The Times as ‘a national treasure’ and was the Children’s Laureate 2013-15. This short tale was first published in a different format as “Elaine, You’re a Brat” but this new incarnation under publisher Barrington Stoke’s “super readable” label and with their trademark dyslexia-friendly layout and typeface and Matt Robertson’s brilliantly lively and humorous illustrations is fully justified and should prove to be an enjoyable read for children of 8+ who prefer short chapter books. It portrays a theme across to children that it isn't worth being selfish as it can lead to consequences. Malorie Blackman mixes comedy with a moral message in this sparky tale of Ellie whose rude, disagreeable behaviour at Grandma’s house leads witchy Grandma to label her a brat and cast a spell on her.

She goes to visit her Grandma on holiday but little does she know she is in for a surprise which will teach her to change her ways. A cautionary tale of brats, cats and a little bit of magic from much loved and best-selling author Malorie Blackman.
