About this deal

I will soon start reading Bill Bryson’s ‘A Walk in the Woods’, which is about the Appalachian Trail, and I have no plans to actually go to the US and do the trail myself! Thanks for not shirking the reports of the incomprehensible attitude of some Australians towards the Aboriginal people, counterbalanced with the accurate recount of the warmth good nature and hospitality of most citizens. From my experience, people rarely recognise themselves in books, and of course, the author can always change the names. Bill Bryson ’s bestselling travel books include The Lost Continent and Notes from a Small Island , which in a national poll was voted the book that best represents Britain. The thing that Bryson most loves about Australia – its “effortlessly dry, direct way of viewing the world” – is, in fact, his own.

When I later checked this hotel out, I discovered that several travellers had indeed given it a very low star rating with a mixture of scornful comments. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. A former Chancellor of Durham University, he was President of the Campaign to Protect Rural England for five years, and is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society. It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. Nevertheless, as with all his books, It is well worth reading and I can confidently say that you will enjoy the journey and will come home knowing a lot more about this fascinating Country's interesting features . The first part of the book mainly describes the journey taken by Bryson aboard the Indian Pacific from Sydney to Perth. Ignoring such dangers and yet curiously obsessed by them Bill Bryson journeyed to Australia and promptly fell in love with the country. The author describes his experiences on the train, the places the train passes through on its way to Perth such as the Blue Mountains and White Cliffs.

He reviewed the new Bryson alongside another book about Australia, Michael Davie's Anglo-Australian Attitudes. we meet many of the strange and unique animals, fish, and plants that have developed that haven't changed since even before the dinosaurs. The problem is that, after a few pages, one finds oneself looking forward to the moments when Bryson takes us back to the library. From its defiantly dreary title onwards, Down Under feels like a journey taken at too great a speed on a road well-worn by other, more intrepid travellers, not to mention millions of ordinary, non-writing tourists. Unlike some Britain's books that get repetitive, like some of the British ones, here you bet an in depth look at what author was feeling while he explored for many weeks. This is, after all, a man who sits through the capital's promotional tourist video, Canberra - It's Got It All!

From ancient fossils on the West coast that can be found there living in small colonies, to the gold rush of 1849, the same time frame as the ones in the USA and Canada. These are Bryson's two best books because they sprang from a powerful sense of identity that gave them a shape.

Ignoring such dangers - and yet curiously obsessed by them - Bill Bryson journeyed to Australia and promptly fell in love with the country. The people are cheerful, extrovert, quick-witted and unfailingly obliging: their cities are safe and clean and nearly always built on water; the food is excellent; the beer is cold and the sun nearly always shines.
