About this deal

A stage version of Dangerous Lady opened at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, London, [2] her third to be presented at the Royal Stratford, to positive reviews. Once you’re hooked on Maura Ryan, be sure to read MAURA’S GAME , the second book from ‘the undisputed queen of crime writing’ ( Guardian).

No one thinks a seventeen-year-old girl can take on the hard men of London's gangland, but it's a mistake to underestimate Maura Ryan: she's tough, clever and beautiful —and she's determined that nothing will stand in her way. When it comes to the crunch, Maura has to face the pain of lost love in her past —and the dangerous lady discovers her heart is not made entirely of stone.Well, that's what I was going to say (yes, I know, I've said it) until I thought I'd just check up some background details and I discovered that this was her first book, written when she was only twenty, that she finished it and locked it away in a cupboard for a couple of years. Dangerous Lady tells us the story of Maura Ryan, from her birth in the 50’s through to the 80’s where she is working as a hardened criminal mastermind. The oldest brother, Michael, is the patriarchal figure and controls their gangland activity in the city. In both characters, Cole asks how much of a life of crime is down to personal choice and how much of it is down to circumstances? No one thinks a seventeen year old girl can take on the hard men of London's gangland, but its a mistake to underestimate Maura Ryan: she's tough, clever and beautiful - and she's determined that nothing will stand in her way. Would highly recommend to anyone who likes a good gripping ‘gangster’ style book set in London with a strong powerful leading lady!Martina Cole is the acknowledged queen of crime drama with more than twenty novels to her name, of which over a dozen have been No. When I was a teenager, but I still greatly think of this book and I'll never read it again, because I want to keep it perfect in my memory just as well as I keep Diogenes Alejandro Xenos (Dax) from Robbins' 'The Adventures' untouched in my childhood memories. Her unique, powerful storytelling is acclaimed for its hard-hitting, true-to-life style - there is no one like Martina Cole.

This is as much about sibling loyalty and rivalry as it is about crime, and it's all very well done. This novel runs a tried and tested formula of Cole's, one family, four decades, you get drawn into the heart of them, the very point where love and hate pump out simultaneously.

This first book of Cole's also has some great quotes from working class humour to challenging the way society judges and treats criminals of the ruler classes.

Overall what counts is that this was an easy read and compelling enough to not get boring or drag over its 600+ pages!

So I am writing this review in a notepad on the eve of my family trip to Great Yarmouth which I’m really excited about and I can hopefully share some pictures of it on my Instagram and Twitter pages over the next few days as the by the time I post this I will be back from my holiday – boo! I found myself laughing at the witty sayings and descriptions she has a clever way of describing people and things. The advance signposting of events took away any suspense - it felt like a soap opera rather than a thriller. I managed to read it all the way through but gradually becoming more and more amazed at it's popularity - characters ok, story aspects ranging from poor to ok, dialogue barely ok, For me two things make a book good - do I want to read to the end and does it make me think. Despite this being predominantly a crime novel, I loved the way that the family saga was wound and weaved into the story.
