About this deal

With a foreword by Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Chuck D’s art debut Livin’ Loud is a visual experience of over 250 artworks, each piece reflective of the man behind the music. The band emerged from the late 1970s/early ‘80s coalescence of rap, punk, and street art into hip-hop music culture on the East Coast. Music is a vibration of what I see,” Chuck D told PW, noting that he is influenced by “the study of artists across time who froze their real-time moments” into works of art.

Chuck D’s style can be described as neo-expressionistic, with images and text often intertwined (not entirely unlike famed graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, for example). His book is the culmination of a string of his exhibitions appearing at Gallery 30 South, Shepard Fairey’s Subliminal Projects Gallery and Adelphi University. He began the trilogy of journals in 2020, just as COVID-19 was starting to take hold in the country and a new presidential election was on the horizon. Recently, I’ve reverted into the arts, combining all these elements in my work, still trying to change the world.I was raised with an artist’s mentality; my first 25 years were spent as somebody who wanted to live among graphics and artwork and illustration, and then for the next 30 years it was all music. With a foreword by Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello and featuring over 250 of Chuck D's paintings, sketches and drawings, Livin' Loud includes a commentary of over 13,000 words in which he offers unprecedented insight into his life and work.

Everything from oil paintings of 1950s baseball fields to pencil sketches of Nina Simone, Bob Dylan, and the Beastie Boys appears in the book. Working with a selection of media, sketchpads and canvases, Chuck D has produced hundreds of artworks over the last six years. Some themes are depicted in portraits and feature prominent people such as Salman Rushdie, Jay-Z, even the Pope. It is undoubtedly a must-have for serious fans of Chuck D and Public Enemy, and it can also be strongly recommended for anyone who wants to see interesting artwork from this period and through some fresh and unique eyes.Chuck D's edition of 1,200 copies worldwide comes in three different art sets, each numbered and signed by the author. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. To me, expressionism rages against the machine that powers those styles that are always striving for perfection,” he says. Each journal follows a distinct period in Chuck D’s (and America’s) life; There’s a Poison Goin On chronicles the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, from February–April 2020; 45 Daze of REaD Octobot follow the days leading up to and the aftermath of the historic 2020 election; and Datamber Mindpaper, which focuses on the early days of the Biden administration. While some people might have decided to go out to a club or the hotel bar, I turned my room into an art studio.
