About this deal

This actually may be the story’s ideal form, since the author’s son Beau came to realize that the core of the tale was the tense relationship between [Marone] and Lopez. The ladies from the farm would laugh underneath the papaya trees and hold their babies as they shared stories from their day. It is the earliest account published of the SAS during WWII in the Western Desert, overflowing with details of desert life and SAS raids behind enemy lines. I would love to share a section of one of the readings that painted a beautiful picture of the miracle of Jesus’s incarnation.

After reading quite a few of L'Amour's books I have an appreciation that he insisted on accuracy in his historic tales; I know that he worked hard through both book study and personal travel all over the west to make that happen. It is a personal description of these men: of their emotions, of the way they bore their hardships and sufferings, and of their never-ending humour. The nominees, chosen by a blue-ribbon panel of judges, reflect the wide range of material being published in comics and graphic novel form today, from history (real and imagined) to science fiction to autobiography.

Family histories and loyalties run deep, but when rancher Tom Forrester has his access to the Pecos River cut off by the son of his old partner, he convinces his foreman, Shad Marone, to pay Jud Bowman back for the discourtesy. Grub Line Rider: A new man comes into the ranch and announces that he needs 600 head of cattle to start his own outfit up on the ridge, and, by the way, the owner's daughter is welcome to come be his cook!

Mostly written from the author's daily journal and personal notes with beautiful descriptions of the desert environment, anecdotes describing the personalities and quirks of members of the SAS team and the day to day impressions and concerns of the author. I followed up on reading Ben Macintyre's book Rogue Heroes on the SAS with this one, a personal history written by the doctor who worked with that unit for a year. There are also few medical insights, which for me could have transformed this story about the North African front.

Handcuffed and gunless, he joins the posse as they cross the plains into the desert, serving as their tracker and guide. A nice addition is the historical notes after each story that are at least tangentially related to preceding story. They are nothing less than modern classics of the American West, told by one of the most beloved storytellers of our time. The original text has now been augmented by supplementary notes by David List and appendices on SAS casualties and awards by David Buxton. Although I’m not all that big on Westerns, whether in print or on screen, I really enjoyed this style and will likely look for more.Malcolm James served as Medical Officer with the SAS throughout 1942 and 1943, and Born of the Desert is his atmospheric account of his life in the North African desert, the bitter fighting against Italian and German targets, and the forging of a remarkable elite unit. The ending is certainly a wild west ideal of redemption and it leaves the reader to mull over, or debate with others, just who was betrayed the most and who actually was in the wrong. Yeates’s black-and-white depiction of the rugged landscape and the hard-bitten characters is superb. The Black Rock Coffin Makers - Jim Gatlin, new Tucker arrival mistaken for Jim Walker, takes on missing farmer's claim against town bigshot Wing Cary.
