My novel The Giants and the Joneses is going to be made into a film by the same team who made the Harry Potter movies, and I have written three books of stories about the anarchic Princess Mirror-Belle who appears from the mirror and disrupts the life of an otherwise ordinary eight-year-old. Axel has achieved worldwide acclaim for his humorous illustrations, and his books have been translated into over 29 languages.

The book was also made into a play by Tall Stories and into an animated film by Magic Light, which was shown on BBC TV at Christmas 2012.

I imagined the witch to be quite young-looking but very untidy, so at first when I saw Axel’s sketches of a neatly-dressed old hag I was a bit taken aback.
