About this deal

Professor Vickery is a thorough and disciplined academic who has trawled through many often obscure archives and tapped unusual or long neglected reservoirs of information. This phenomenal story about mental abuse taken to the extreme was so expertly plotted and drawn out that I was stunned to learn later that this was the author’s debut novel.

Another sweltering month in Charlotte, another boatload of mysteries past and present for overworked, overstressed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. There isn't much mystery to speak of in this domestic thriller; its focus lies heavily on the struggle of our heroine and her desperate measures of combat. And while this is not completely unrealistic and I could believe he would go to such trouble to create his "fantasy", the mindless villainy of him, plus his penchant for showmanship, verges on a caricature. Maybe people just need mental junk food now and then, and it’s better to have junk food that’s well put together—think a Snickers bar—than junk food that’s just bad—think gummy worms. As the story unfolds, both in the past and in the present I anxiously waited for the other shoe to drop. The story fallows Grace, an elegant, ‘perfect’ housewife who seems to have it all – good looks, a perfect, caring husband and a lovely home.

Every time I put the book down I tried to figure out how this horrific monster would possibly be defeated. An avid listener of Agatha Christie audiotapes, Millie has pretended to have a sleeping issue, but has actually been hoarding the pills to then pass along to Grace. A. Paris, is a story about a perfect-looking marriage that is anything but what it appears to be on the surface. When Grace tells her friend, Esther, that Jack wants to stay behind and join her in Thailand in a few days so he can catch up on paperwork and sulk about his loss, Esther picks her up and takes her to the airport. A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy. Behind Closed Doors is a page-turner on one hand and a thoughtful meditation on the other: dispassionate, balanced and brave.

I’d stopped enjoying the book soon after I started and only hung in there to see if it would improve. Although I questioned some of Grace's decisions, it felt like one of those situations where you couldn't possibly know how you would react unless it was happening to you.

Grace schemes a way to escape Jack’s clutches and save Millie from the same fate, but the tension sags. But as we dive back between the present and the past (marked by the chapter), we quickly discover just what lies beneath the surface, behind closed doors. This story highlights the fact that there are flaws lingering beneath all surfaces of perfection, and shows just one horrific example of what could really be going on behind closed doors. Brooks presents a case for making room for Bigfoot in the world while peppering his narrative with timely social criticism about bad behavior on the human side of the conflict: The explosion of Rainier might have been better forecast had the president not slashed the budget of the U. Relying on documents such as account books, journals, letters, inventories and wills, Vickery paints pictures for her readers…Vickery discusses not only the appearance in everyday life in Georgian England but also the nature of the relationships within it… Behind Closed Doors is a fascinating contribution to our understanding of the Georgian period.

Unlike other books dealing with abuse and sociopaths, 'Behind Closed Doors' did not provide a lot of graphic, gory details. She also has a sister with Down’s Syndrome named Mille that she needs to protect because eventually Millie will move in with her and Jack. Although this truly was one of the most chilling thrillers I have read in a while, the twists and the plot weren’t altogether too shocking for me. Although I'm clearly not a fan, the crocodile-skinned lady, and many on Goodreads, absolutely loved it.Brooks is a pro at building suspense even if it plays out in some rather spectacularly yucky episodes, one involving a short spear that takes its name from “the sucking sound of pulling it out of the dead man’s heart and lungs. But things are not as they appear as hinted at by the title, and that is the premise for this heart-in-your-throat domestic psychological thriller. After a whirlwind courtship, Grace and Jack get married, though the affair doesn’t go entirely smoothly, with Millie tumbling down the stairs hours before the ceremony and breaking her leg. Behind Closed Doors demonstrates that rigorous academic work can also be nosy, gossipy, and utterly engaging. Looking back, I’d say there are maybe two times I had to suspend disbelief, but I didn’t care—the story had me by the throat and I was fighting for breath.
