About this deal

They tried to ban it in Japan, it was verboten in the US for a while, and even in the UK people spoke about it in hushed tones. The kids of Third Year Class-B Shiroiwa Junior High School are back, in a brand new UHD restoration of the classic cult shocker. The HDR10 presentation is excellent, but those of you with Dolby Vision capability will appreciate its benefits, especially in darker scenes. The Revenge cut—which was originally released in 2009 on DVD only—features more action, an alternate score, extensive use of slow motion, slightly better CG effects, more of Takeshi Kitano’s cameo, and more character flashbacks in general (including an alternate opening that better explains the motivations of the seemingly insane man who forces the teens into battle).

That’s virtually all of the special features that have been produced over the years (save for a few items created by Capelight Pictures’ for recent German BD releases). Apologies for a question that’s probably easy to answer, but because Arrow took down the Battle Royale page, my last thought was to ask here. When his son Kenta discovered Koushun Takami’s controversial Battle Royale in 1999—which was nearly banned by the Japanese government upon its release—Fukasaku read the novel and became engrossed by its story, which brought back his memories of the war. The fifth disc in the set is also a soundtrack CD, so one can pretend that they're being hunted by their classmates if one listen to it whilst out for a run.

There are all sorts of rumours going around on the internet that this is an "up-scaled Standard Definition" version of the film. They offer an abundance of interesting background information on the director and his long career, as well as production details and context for the film. For that reason, the Millennium Educational Reform Act was ordained, where one school class is selected at random and taken in secret to a deserted island, where they have to battle each other for their very survival. Presenting an alternate dystopian vision of turn-of-the-millennium Japan, Battle Royale follows the 42 junior high school students selected to take part in the government's annual Battle Royale programme, established as an extreme method of addressing concerns about juvenile delinquency. This is why, when I hear reports about recent outbreaks of teenage violence and crimes, I cannot easily judge or dismiss them.

This time last year, I had finally got around to reviewing the 2010 Limited Edition Blu-ray release of Battle Royale, which was when Arrow Video went and announced a brand new Limited Edition of Battle Royale, on UHD and on Blu-ray. With school children all over the country growing increasingly delinquent, the Japanese government takes decisive action and introduces the Battle Royale Act. The packaging is robust and well-designed, the video extras are numerous and non-filler, and the extra gifts ("Parents' Day" comic, the two booklets, the poster, and film stills) are all well presented and very well picked. This very same class believe they are going on a field trip, when they are rendered unconscious on a coach. Also included is Battle Royale II: Requiem and its special edition director’s cut version Battle Royale II: Revenge across two Blu-ray discs. In the disc 1 digipack, you’ll find a 52 page booklet with cast lists for both films, although the essays, two new and one from 2010 are for Battle Royale. All told, Arrow Video’s new Battle Royale: Limited Edition is a spectacular box set for fans of this film. Playing like a turbo-charged hybrid of Lord of the Flies and The Most Dangerous Game, the final completed work by veteran yakuza film director Kinji Fukasaku ( Battles without Honor and Humanity, Graveyard of Honor) helped launch a new wave of appreciation for Asian cinema in the 21st century. Inspired by Koushun Takami's controversial bestseller, the two films comprising the collection - Battle Royale and Battle Royale II: Requiem - detail a dystopian . The second film,' Battle Royale 2: Requiem ' , picks up three years after the events of the first movie, where the survivors of previous games have come together to form a resistance group, The Wild Seven, to try and fight against the government.

Compared to the previous Anchor Bay Blu-ray release—which often looked washed out, with grayed blacks, and excessive DNR and edge enhancement—the improvement in image detail is absolutely tremendous. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Every player is fitted with an explosive collar around their neck, imposing a strict three-day time limit on the deadly games in which there can only be one survivor.
