It’s even (unless plans go awry, in which case I’ll delete this sentence making these parentheses entirely pointless) before the next Squad meeting, the Christmas dinner on the 8th of December, so this officially makes me a good boy again.Opened as recently as 1995, Arran is a relatively new distillery located on the island of the same name, just off the west coast of Scotland. To taste it had the traditional Arran burst of icing sugar followed by wood polish, prickly spice, chocolate orange and vanilla.

Nevertheless since 2007 the Girvan complex has incorporated the Ailsa Bay distillery, which has been releasing single malt since 2016. To taste it’s thick and syrupy, with red grapes, spicy wood and a chunk of tannin, rolling towards a buttery apple finish.We then moved back to Movember whiskies, picking up the second of this year’s MoM bottlings – Smo’key. This helps in the maturation of the whisky, with the constant temperature increasing the effect of time, with Arran whisky often passing as older than it is (as I discovered with one of my SMWS bottlings – 5 years old, the colour of Irn Bru and tasting as rich as something two to three times its age).

Water brought out more syrup on the nose, and added more wood and a touch of milk chocolate to the taste.So, having stuck my name on the mailing list I waited for his next London event, which came up rather fortuitously – a tasting of the range of the Arran distillery‘s whiskies, led by Céline Têtu. There's a definite, yet subtle, smokiness too, which makes them great alongside cured ham, cheese, smoked salmon and dark chocolate, or mixed with soda and a twist of lemon over ice. We rounded up a 10-strong tasting panel of experts and keen whisky drinkers, and asked them to try 27 different drams (tough gig).
