About this deal

Evidence suggests there is a connection to Christopher Shaw who 17 years ago as a loner of a teenager is brutally attacked and though badly wounded he survives but inevitably carries deep scars. There is some well-managed Dickensian plotting, for one thing, including a tense scene in which the discovery of a body is presaged by a mess of misrecognised remains, and which owes a good deal to the discovery of the combusted Mr Krook in Bleak House. Most of those moments won’t be important but a handful will turn out to be pivotal, shattering even.

Firstly I would like to thank netgalley, and Penguin Random House, and the Author Alex North for an early copy of this book. Because I read so many middle grade and young adult books, sometimes I forget how transfixing it can be to read really great writing.Once again, the author used his wild and clever imagination and brought us a heart pounding, fast-paced, thriller! The story centers on Joe and is mostly told from his perspective but we also get chapters from Edie's perspective as well as Young Edie and Young Joe.

At nearly 500 pages, it's hefty and densely packed, so it took me a while to read — this is not the sort of book I zip through, despite wanting to know what happens next. But it might help to direct attention to what may be the most interesting thing about Angelmaker, namely how, in the midst of all this boisterous errancy, Harkaway finds a way both to acknowledge the particular circumstances of his own writing, and to reflect on a wider contemporary sense of generational unease.Pullman’s new book is a collection of straightforward renderings (and not embellished retellings) of 50 Grimm tales and as Mr Pullman discussed the book one of the things he said struck me as quite interesting: the fact that in these tales the characters are not real people.

Remnants of documents found in his home lead the detective back to an old serial killer named Jack Lock who supposedly could see the future. I had no idea what was going to happen from one chapter to the next, and believe me I concentrated really hard on this book so it wasn't for lack of trying. The book made it seem that the nutjob serial kill was in fact some prophet with supernatural abilities. North gives readers little tidbits as the book progresses to keep them intrigued, invested and glued to the pages.

He likes ordinary things like rivers and mountains, and remarkable things like modern medicine and the making of wine. What's more, for all the clockwork and locomotion, the thermodynamics and the Babbage technobabble, Harkaway can't be said to have hitched his bandwagon to the runaway engine of steampunk. Harkaway plays the English language like a mad virtuoso: he hits all the right notes but isn't above throwing in a bit of ornamentation and jazzing things up. First, there is Katie Show she is a mother, a little overprotective but she knows that bad things can happen when you are not careful. This was a creepy, fast and entertaining read for myself as I really enjoyed the author's writing and storytelling.
