It's a happy ending of sorts, but there's a lot of icky dark stuff that has to happen along the way. The character of Massimo—all of his overpowering energy—spoke to what Lipińska craved at that point in her life. They include libertines who skin children alive, disembowel pregnant women, burn entire families alive and kill newborn babies in front of their mothers. As far as I’m concerned, this is a perfect picture book, as layered and thoughtful and moving as many adult novels I have read.
