About this deal

When the issue was discussed on a messageboard dedicated to the club, Middlesex Till We Die, it was met with a threat of legal action. The messageboard subsequently closed. I sat at the AGM with one of my real tennis friends, Barry, together with his son Freddie. At the party, the three of us then got together with another friend/retired client of mine, David and also Barmy Kev joined us at our table. Middlesex have been penalised and effectively placed in 'special measures' by the ECB after breaching various financial regulations.

A statement released by the ECB said Middlesex "have accepted non-compliance of their CPA with ECB, and that the Club has been financially mismanaged over a number of years and is in breach of the ECB financial regulations." In those days I would sometimes comment on a group of people I would describe as “The Allen Stand Gossips”– a devoted collection of Middlesex CCC fans who mostly sat in that stand and nearly always had some gossip to impart about the players and/or the club. I soon learnt who Janet Davis was amongst that loosely-associated group.

Yes, Janet certainly had her favourites. Chad Keegan, I recall in particular. She also had a soft spot for Chris Wright – I remember Janet was devastated when Chris left Middlesex (or should I say, in Janet style, “was poached by Essex”?).

Before and after the buffet, Gus Fraser hosted a show; basically a reprise of the 2016 County Championship campaign. There were several sections and subsections (Gus got mightily confused/confusing over the segmentation aspects of the show), including video clips and discussion, with the whole 2016 squad forming a large panel. When I became an MTWD administrator and took on most of the editorial side, at the start of the 2006 season, I suggested that we widen the base of people to provide editorial material. I suggested Janet as one of the people who could and should contribute that way. Thus Janet became a major contributor of match reports for a few years. The Thursday mini works outing comprised me, Jez, Monique, Steph, Rich and Grant. That season, Jez and I were organising several mini-outings to the T20 matches, rather than the slightly larger whole team outings that became the norm in later years. The weather was especially good that June – as Monique wrote the next day: That was the year that I kept a scrap book, which has been given to Vinny [Codrington – former Chief Executive] for Middlesex archives. Then I remembered a Seaxe Club evening in the St John’s Wood Church Hall, where we raised some money for the cause by betting on movie clips from old horse and dog races. In the period that Janet regularly reported matches for MTWD, between 2006 and 2009, she provided a great many match reports and photographs. As the MTWD team had advised me, Janet wasn’t the easiest contributor on our books. Prior to talk about the successful season, discussion centred around the proposed new T20 tournament and Durham’s penalty relegation. MTWD have written up the forum, here. Winding on 32 years and I now have the privilege of being the Chief Executive of this great institution and Club and sometimes I still have to pinch myself. Those heroes have become colleagues and friends and I know few people who gain as much pride and pleasure from their occupation as I do. Middlesex CCC is so much more than a Sports Club. It’s a family that looks after its staff, members and supporters in a way no corporate entity truly can. It has truly been a love affair for me. This one was supposed to be in The President’s Box as last year (a suitable size of venue) but had to be moved to The Thomas Lord Suite (ridiculously oversized) due to some flooding problems and the need temporarily to relocate some MCC staff to The President’s Box.

Middlesex and Lord’s have impacted me in other ways too. I first met my wife Lucy at Lord’s in 2005 and we had our wedding reception in the Committee Dining Room. My children have all grown up knowing Lord’s as a second home to them and love the association. They were truly born into the club. Not such clever scheduling on my part for this day (my own fault), so I ended up hot-footing it from the City to get to Lord’s on time. My timing issues were exacerbated by the early start scheduled (17:30) and a late change to the AGM venue, which was supposed to be in the Thomas Lord Suite, as last year, but was switched to the Nursery Pavilion at the last minute.

Still, I took the Friday off and went to Lord’s to see Day One of the Northants match, probably taking a wad of reading with me, as was my wont. A big turn out for the AGM with many AGM attendees staying on for the party and some there for the party but not the AGM. Anyway, I think the AGM started a little bit later than intended; to allow time for the bemused and confused (like me) to be stewarded to the right part of the ground. Middlesex responded with a statement that described them as "extremely disappointed with the outcome of the ECB's investigation and the sanctions which are imposed upon us."

The AGM was no more dull than usual, in the main. The contentious issue of the new T20 tournament was handled very well, with Mike O’Farrell signalling what was to come in his opening remarks and Richard Goatley then reading out the statement, getting early applause when the gist of it became clear to the throng. Through my twenties, I could not get to Lord’s very often. Because I was working abroad for much of the time. But when, over Christmas 2004, I saw an advertisement for the Head of Finance role at Middlesex, I didn’t have to think twice. I had a first interview with Vinny Codrington and instantly liked him and was invited for a second interview with Treasurer Geoff Norris and Chilton Taylor (he of the unregistered player, points deduction scandal!). I was aware that I was the second of two candidates being interviewed for the position and, as I sat down, I noticed that Geoff Norris, at the bottom of his notes about the previous candidate had written ‘Too old!!!!’– from that point on I relaxed, knowing I had a pretty good chance. Apparently this was an age-old Seaxe Club tradition, but as far as I know it has not been done since 2009 (May 2017 is the time of writing). As a result, the ECB have demanded oversight of the club's financial plans going forward, which will limit spending on players and demand they show a "sustainable year-on-year profit". The plans will be monitored by the ECB on a quarterly basis, with them attending Middlesex board and audit meetings.

The Thomas Lord Suite is large enough for a lecture-style room for the meeting and a large open space next door for the party afterwards. The mood at the party was as good as you might expect. Looking forward, I am genuinely excited at the future prospects of the Club. We have a great staff here and a strategy that will deliver success. I can’t promise I’ll deliver the multitude of trophies that I enjoyed as a boy but I can promise that our team and I will give it our very best shot at all times. Richard Goatley decribes his Middlesex Journey from a kid supporting the club to Chief Executive. A fascinating read. The panel discussion, with traditional libations before and during the panel, was quite lively, with Richard Scott and Shilpa Patel bringing very different perspectives to the questions.
