About this deal

Plant strawberries in mid-spring or in late summer/early autumn – no later than the first week of September innorthern Britain and the second week of September in southern regions. Planting in August or early September gives them longer to get established before fruiting, so they should produce a better crop. The Garden of Earthly Delights is popular because we can see surreal images of our own, modern existence in it. Since the 1960s, it has been hailed as a psychedelic romp. Those giant strawberries are like free narcotics at a music festival. What strikes us when we look at it is the sheer joyous excess and mad profusion of this painter’s mind. Was he some kind of heretic, speculating on an alternative lifestyle of free love and fruity fun with no thought of tomorrow? However, instead of bearing one big harvest over the next month, these berries will keep growing and bearing fruit all summer long, sometimes even into the Fall months!

You could also grow them in a vertical planter, like this one. Or grow strawberry plants in these metal raised garden beds, which would keep all the weeds out. Just snip the runner close to where the NEW growth is. Plant that baby in a separate bed or area. This is how you get new daughter plants. Give your strawberries plenty of space. Dig a hole with a trowel big enough to take the roots of the plant. Plant them 45cm (18in) apart, leaving 75cm (30in) between rows - the crown should be level with the soil surface. Our berry plants are the everbearing variety; the following information applies no matter which strawberry variety you choose to plant. After cropping, remove any straw and netting to allow better airflow around the crown of the plant.

Plants older than 3 years are usually past their prime and you will have lots of newer babies by that time. The June bearing variety of strawberry plants start bearing fruit around the middle of June, here at least. They will keep bearing fruit for about four weeks. Everbearing strawberries After cropping, remove any straw and netting to allow better air flow around the crown of the plant. By the end of the growing season, all the plants will be the same size. It’s easier for us to keep them in different beds.Plant in a sunny and sheltered position in fertile, free-draining soil. Poor soil can be improved by adding compost or well-rotted manure prior to planting. See, this is why we plant the runners into a different bed. This helps us after a few years to remember where the oldest plants are.) If you're planting into a basket, it's best to limit yourself to three or four strawberry plants in a 30cm (12in) basket. Add water-retaining granules and slow-release fertiliser into the compost before planting.

Both the everbearing and the june-bearers will produce a great yield of berries. How to Plant Strawberries Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location. Perpetual strawberries – sometimes called everbearers, they produce small flushes of fruit over a long period, from early summer until the first autumn frosts. The crops are not as large as summer-fruiting varieties, the fruits are smaller and plants are less likely to produce runners. As the summer progresses, keep on top of weeding and continue to remove any runners. Clear away dead foliage as this can harbour pests and diseases over winter. Soon the plant will start bearing flowers – each of the flower buds will turn into a strawberry. You will probably find a LOT of flowers on EACH plant. The Garden of Earthly Delights is a triptych that can be folded open. When closed, it shows a monochrome painting of the creation of the world, with God looking down on a flat landscape sealed inside a giant bubble. Open the tall side panels on their hinges and you are confronted by a world – or rather three worlds – of lurid colour and hallucinatory invention. In the left panel, God introduces Eve to Adam in the Garden of Eden. In the one on the right, Bosch imagines all the sufferings and monstrosities of hell, including a bird-headed creature eating a naked man, a pig dressed as a nun and a hollowed out giant with trees for limbs and an inn inside his pale egg-like torso. And snip off any more runners that appear. This part is tough, because you see all the runners and flowers and think of all the strawberries coming! Grow Huge Strawberries using these best tips! If you want just a few plants but huge berries, snip these runners off! Yes, every single one of them. These Felco hand pruners are perfect for making clean cuts. During this strawberry season in late January and early February it was particularly cold," explained Dr. Nir Dai, who was one of the witnesses during the strawberry's weigh-in. Just remember, the more flowers, the more berries, but they will be smaller. The fewer flowers, the fewer berries, but they will be definitely be large strawberries.
