A bonfire, a bonfire, a bonfire. David Cameron promised one as prime minister, as did Boris Johnson, as did Liz Truss when she ran for the highest office in the land. Conservative leaders come and go, but they all want a conflagration. Always of red tape, of course, the semi-mythical substance that is said to throttle business. The trouble is that, in the case of Grenfell Tower, it was human lives that burned. The 30-year pursuit of deregulation in the building industry demonstrably contributed to the killing of 72 people in their homes. It helped lead to the moment when a two-year-old boy died coughing and crying in his mother’s arms while she was on her phone to a firefighter, shortly before she too died. The media, especially the tabloid press and later the new private stations, discovered the child abuse rate as a promising topic. Although such crimes did not occur more frequently than in the 60s and 70s, the impression arose that the sexual abuse of children is pervasive. Kindergartens were observed with suspicion about how close the educators would get to the children, and divorce lawyers discovered in the denunciation of the fathers as pedophiles a successful strategy. In the general sense of alarm, there were also quite useful debates: for the first time, sex tourism in developing countries was not seen as a trivial matter. Finally, in 1992, Justice Minister Klaus Kinkel submitted a tougher anti-child pornography bill to “protect children from the perversions of adults.” Show Me! The book is analyzed in an article on "Picturing Sex Education" (Discourse Volume 27, Number 4 / December 2006). Excerpt: "Please notice: I said 'safer sex,' not 'safe sex.' In today's world, there is no such thing as absolutely 'safe sex' when we're talking about intercourse." However, starting in 1977, some states began to criminalize the distribution of even non-obscene so-called "child pornography," or "images of abuse," which arguably is not protected by the First Amendment. New York State, home of the publisher, St. Martin's Press, criminalized the distribution of non-obscene "child pornography" in 1977, but the publisher promptly went to court and obtained an injunction against the State. The court granted the injunction because the First Amendment was interpreted to permit the banning of only obscene material. [7] Få se! It appeared in 1974 in German under the title Zeig Mal!, written with psychiatrist Helga Fleischhauer-Hardt for children and their parents. It was translated into English a year later and was widely available in bookstores on both sides of the Atlantic for many years, but later became subject to expanded child pornography laws in jurisdictions including the United States. In Germany, the book was followed in 1990 by a second edition that included, among other additions, a discussion of the AIDS epidemic. If they’d been listened to, they would all still be alive. A similar fire, which killed six people at Lakanal House in south London in 2009, should have been enough of a warning, but it wasn’t. Seventy-eight people were killed by a collision of forces with one common root: the broad contempt showed by people with power towards those without it.
