About this deal

While I adore Ito, I'm not a huge fan of his linked stories and I found Lovesickness to be one of his weakest volumes to date. The first is centred around a town in which people go to crossroads to ask people to tell them their fortune. Lovesickness by Junji Ito | Goodreads

The best horror bypasses your critical and/or intellectual faculties, pushing psychological buttons, some you may not even know you have. The Lovesickness story takes up the first 250 pages and is decent but ultimately went on a little bit too long for my personal taste. Ito first began writing and drawing manga as a hobby while working as a dental technician in the early 1990s. With Lovesickness, Ito uses the initial death of Midori’s aunt as the major event that gives birth to Nazumi’s curse, only picking up momentum when Ryusuke moves back to town nearly a decade later. The two stories of The Strange Hikizuri Siblings are the best in the book in part because Ito leans into the humour that’s more or less always there in his work, rather than try to make it seem only horrific.r/junjiito is dedicated to legendary award-winning horror mangaka Junji Itō (伊藤潤二) and friends like Kazuo Umezz (楳図かずお), Hideshi Hino (日野日出志), and other horror mangaka. At the very least, Lovesickness is an original idea - I’ve never heard of hiding your face and asking strangers for fortunes - but it’s also a hella stupid one. Not only does the Kinokuniya version come in an exclusive cover design, but it also comes with a Kinokuniya exclusive bonus shikishi art board of the artwork featured on the original cover! There’s also a pair of manga about ‘the strange Hikizuri siblings’ – ‘Narumi’s Boyfriend’ and ‘The Séance’ – which have to rank among my least favourites of all the Ito I’ve read; this type of humour either works for you or really doesn’t, and I’m in the latter camp.

In this method of fortune-telling, a person stands at a crossroad and asks the first person they encounter to tell them their fortune. While the premise and concept are very cool and similar to that of Uzumaki, I don't think the execution is nearly as good. The Strange Hikizuri Siblings’ was incredibly creepy solely due to the character designs, and ‘The Mansion of Phantom Pain’ had an awesome concept where characters where less important.

Judging solely by the cover images, both Hazard's Italian Tomie translation and the Spanish Tomie series from La Cúpula are based on Tomie Zen, but this has not yet been confirmed. His works subvert the genre by bending, twisting, and blending it far beyond the familiar, resulting in the greatest chilling, thrilling, and grotesquely horrific storytelling of our time. I also love the artfully big letters of sound-words, sprawled across a given panel, for the way they add an onomatopoeic representation of very creepy noises in your mind's ear, as you read along.

Nick and Nicky discuss their favorite horror series and compare notes on which anime monsters are perfect for the . Meanwhile the girls of the town form something akin to a serial killer fanclub for the ghost, who they believe to be Ryūsuke, and begin chasing him around town in swarms. Another couple of stories fill out the book, including an especially weird one about a boy who is in constant pain, the pain being part of the house he lives in.I might say that the ten stories here are not appreciably better or worse than other collections (so, 3 stars? It's no surprise then that Ito's Lovesickness manga (now available in English by Viz Media) follows a similar pattern. Things take a turn for the worse when girls begin stalking him home in groups, inevitably forcing him to go into hiding for both his own protection and his family's safety.
