About this deal

These children urgently need to catch up, so the gap between themselves and their peers does not widen. Any child with a SEND, who would struggle with cognitive overload from the pace of the Rapid Catch-Up programme, is assessed on the SEND assessment and the best SEND pathway and planning is selected for them accordingly.

The school I teach at swapped to little wandle at the start of the year and we've had to reorganise, give away and purchase new books. As reading and spelling are reversible processes, and because we teach spelling alongside reading, children will learn to spell words with these suffixes too. The 32 Phase 3 Big Cat books match perfectly to the Little Wandle progression and support all the Letters and Sounds / Tricky words and words children meet in this phase. Any child identified as not meeting ARE in Reading is assessed on the LW Rapid Catch-Up Assessment and entered onto the programme if needed.

It provides pathways for pupils who may need very specific adaptations to the teaching steps because they have complex needs, and has been developed with the advice from Special schools across the country. In the meantime, reading a variety of other books is widening his exposure to new words so that can only be a good thing I guess! For example, we have seen whole class teaching work well in schools with a high % of EAL children where word meaning is taught as blending and reading are taught. Big Cat Little wandle books are linked directly to the phonics progression of sounds and tricky words taught. I’m “just” a parent, but books like Songbirds Phonics definitely seem to follow a phonetic difficulty progression through the bands.

Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised has been developed by Little Sutton and Wandle English Hubs and taken forward by Little Sutton Primary School and Wandle Learning Trust in partnership with other phonics and early reading experts. We teach letter formation using our formation phrases, which make a link between the mnemonic and the letter. This is a much faster paced and age appropriate version of the Little Wandle scheme which enables children to access age appropriate reading and therefore the full curriculum much more rapidly, and also prepares them for the KS3 curriculum when they move onto secondary school. This could be by showing pictures or objects with the sound in and getting the children to guess or find the sound. However, for some children it may be best for them to be part of the main lesson and then work with an adult. In addition to our daily phonics lessons, we also model the application of the alphabetic code through phonics in shared reading and writing, both inside and outside of the phonics lesson and across the curriculum. By the end of Year 1, children will have been taught all of the phonemes and graphemes in the English language and should be able to decode and read any word. I’d agree with Biff, Chip and Kipper era books just being less words, some of the words in even the easiest bands of these books aren’t easy at all!

Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. Purchasing your books from Badger Learning means they will arrive in school fitted with free protective jackets so your new books will last much longer. To meet the demands of the new programme we have invested heavily as a school in the matching Harper Collins reading books for both the main Little Wandle programme and the Rapid Catch Up programme for ages 7+. This enables their passion for reading to soar and give them a love of reading that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. These three parts of the programme work together to provide you with everything you need to prepare your children for phonics teaching in Reception. Pupils in EY and KS1 are given reading books each week, which directly link to the phonics sounds they are being taught so that phonics knowledge is consolidated.

He's pretty fluent now in the phase 5 so just waiting to see whether these 7+ books are offered next or something else more challenging. Please speak to a member of staff if you require more information about how we deliver the Little Wandle programme to children with SEND.When I Google 'little Wandle big cat book bands', it's the first link that comes up for me, titled 'sheet 1'. There are also some useful videos so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about supporting their reading at home. Featuring an exciting mix of stories and non-fiction to foster a love of reading in all children, matched to the Little Wandle progression.
