About this deal

Then player’s get a deck of matching cards, a treasure trove scorer (set to zero) and a graveyard in their player colour. If there was a good (hook/map/chest) loot token and a bad token, Automa would play the third card from the right.

In fact, Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest excels at scaling up and down between player counts without adding to the overall game time. Norway isn’t a member of the EU while Denmark is, so maybe the setup that Spiral Galaxy created for the EU after Brexit doesn’t cover Norway. Some of the human loot tiles don’t make sense for Automa and some would be imbalanced, so you’d need to use the Automa loot tiles some of which would require house ruling for the same reason that some of the cards do IIRC. Players can never be totally confident that playing the highest-ranking pirate from their hand will get them the best loot token.Libertalia (designed by Paolo Mori) is becoming one of my favourite games of all time, it’s so simple but with so many opportunities to try and create synergy with your shipmates and loot. After each player has activated their characters on the island, any loot remaining on that day is put back in the bag.

Every game excels at different player counts, for me at two player this board game doesn’t shine quite so brightly. At two, I found that I needed more clarification around what happens to certain cards with the fixed pseudo-third-player overlay and they weren’t necessarily in the rule book. The Pilferer gives a bit of variety to the loot you can take and adds an element of randomness as it can play any other rank card in the deck and you have to be prepared for your carefully laid plans to potentially go awry. By the time you’ve set up the main board, your player boards, the card markets, that expansion board, the novelty bus made out of pewter, and lord know what else, you need a fricking huge table most of the time. With a couple of sabre fights and retaliations along the way, they both said they enjoyed playing the board game. Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest is played over three journeys, each journey is divided further into four, five and six days respectively. I did enjoy the two-player game as included, but the game is definitely a better experience at the other player counts (including solo). For example, an arrow pointing left with the numerical value of three stipulates that she will play the third card from the left of her tableau.

These mostly net you some bonus gold but there are fun exceptions such as the hook token that lets you keep a card you’ve played in your tableau, which can be handy if it has an ongoing “night” effect. If you ask a question about a specific card or ability, please type the exact text in your comment to help facilitate a speedy and precise answer. For me, Libertalia is absolutely worth owning for many reasons (as it appeals to my tabletop preferences) and this Automa only adds value to the whole package.
