Drawing on untold stories and new archival sources, he will chart the progress of this band of brothers as they fought to turn the tide during Britain’s darkest hour. Viewed largely as human by those who shared her extraordinary life, Judy’s uncanny ability to sense danger, matched with her quick-thinking and impossible daring saved countless lives. This is especially true for Blair “Paddy” Mayne - a complex and multi-layered individual who is usually misrepresented in books and especially so in the current BBC drama - if only they had made this book into a TV series! One in particular caught my eye, to someone who fought and made it back too:Hughie Canavan22nd May 1919 - 19th Nov 200811th Scottish CommandoLitani River 1941Sicily 1943Placed Here By His Loving Family22nd May, also my brother Peter's birthday. Lewis brings the SAS agents to life, noting their final fates and their relationships with their comrades throughout their military careers. There's a lot to be learned in the pages of this book about leadership in general, and leadership in adversity in particular. In its quirky eccentricities and outrageous rule-breaking, this is a story that only the British could have authored, and with such panache and aplomb. Anyone who wants to learn more about the origins of the British Special Forces should read this book. He's the man who gets the most focus here and after reading more about him as I was listening to this book, I appreciate that this book shows him in a light that truly exhibits his personality and values over past works that were quick to label him a mere thug. As is mentioned in the book, especially in medic Malcolm Pleydell's reminisces, this very strange and focused life the men lived in the desert, dedicated to destroying enemy equipment and the killing that went with that work, meant that these men would never be able to truly leave this time behind them. This amazing book has filled in so many gaps, and it commemorates all those consigned by Hitler to the Nacht und Nebel; the night and fog.

This is not a novel or a dramatization, so beloved of Netflix and the BBC, which afford the luxury of speculation and licence. Directed by Guy Ritchie, based on the 2015 book by Damien Lewis and inspired by true events, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare details the World War II strategies conceived by United Kingdom Prime Minister Winston Churchill and James Bond creator and author Ian Fleming, whose clandestine squad’s unconventional and entirely ‘ungentlemanly’ fighting techniques against the Nazis helped change the course of the war and in part gave birth to the modern Black Ops unit. It ends with the hunted becoming the hunters – a group of men intent on seeking out the Nazis responsible for their brethren’s deaths, on an ultra-deniable SAS mission to avenge a war crime.

A dozen of his books have been made, or are being made, into movies or TV drama series and several have been adapted as plays for the stage. The frankly astonishing raids that they entered into are brought tremendously to life and are described in such ways and in such detail that you feel you could be sitting in one of the jeeps in North Africa as they blazed up and down the dunes.

In late summer 1944 eighty SAS soldiers parachuted into the French mountains, targeting one of the last great defences of the Reich. Our team is made up of book lovers who are dedicated to sourcing and providing the best books for kids. What also comes through is how deeply the loss of each man scarred Mayne, how he felt like it was his responsibility to make the right decision for each person under his command, and how he could not let go of each loss. I especially enjoyed the strength of the narrative which easily transports the reader back in time to the desert and you feel that you are there alongside the characters of the book planting Lewes bombs on the wings of axis warplanes during a raid, sitting in the jeeps dodging chasing enemy war planes or sitting around the campfire. Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH).Following the BBC's recreation of the story and the characters involved in SAS ROGUE HEROES, the author now tells us what really happened. Am not sure about all the negative things said about this seller by other people,,, because my experience was completely different, totally positive. The book ends with the SAS entering a new chapter in its history and I look forward to the next book, as Mayne takes the SAS to a new field of action after finishing its work in North Africa. While I do owe several of Damien Lewis WW2 books, 'Brothers In Arms', was my first read from the author, it won't be my last, really like his writing a lot and this one is one of my favorite reads of the 2023 books I've read.
