About this deal

First, let’s talk about that wireless functionality. It utilizes a receiver that you plug into the N64 console itself which also encompasses the memory card slot that you would usually find within the controller itself. The wireless connectivity is pretty flawless due to it being based on 2.4GHz tech and it’ll certainly reach wherever you are in the room. The Switch version also adds additional buttons to allow players access to the home and capture buttons that correspond with Switch functionality that was not available on Nintendo 64. Nintendo of America's head designer, Lance Barr, said that the design studies revealed that "most games use a few buttons for most of the main controls, such as jumping and shooting, or accelerating and braking. That's why the A and B Buttons are placed for easiest access on the new controller and why they are larger than the other buttons. They're the buttons that get high traffic." [4] :12

The N64 controller for Switch, unsurprisingly, bears a striking resemblance to the pad of old. The colored buttons juxtapose nicely against the slate grey controller, and its form factor, while certainly strange, has a unique charm to it. Yes and no. The specific buttons correspond to the classic game controls for better play, but that N64 controller design is so wonky it takes some getting used to now that I've gotten accustomed to modern controllers. (I feel like I just betrayed my youth with that sentence). But honestly, these specific buttons and layout are really only helpful when it comes to more intensive games like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (OoT) that take advantage of everything the controller offers. lr-mupen64plus was abandoned some years ago, so is quite outdated. lr-mupen64plus-next is actively developed, but may be less performant as it has more accurate emulation.

The top of the controller is flanked by L and R shoulder buttons, although most N64 games won't even use the L button by default, given that your hands will be holding the center and right handles for general gameplay. However, many games do support left-handed control options, which is where that three-pronged design shines, even if it's a bit underused. Rumble Functionality – Rumble support in compatible games, such as Star Fox™ 64 – no Rumble Pak™ required! The wireless functionality uses a similar method to that of the Brawler64 with an adapter being inserted in the N64 console. This then allows you to hook your Admiral up and the indication light at the bottom alerts you of the current status. Again, there’s no lag while playing wirelessly which is something that would impact control-intensive titles like Diddy Kong racing. a b "Nintendo's N64 Pad - What's Inside?". NFG World. Besides the included USB A-C cable you'll need to charge the controller, of course. The reason why we’ve included this controller even though that it is almost identical to that of the wireless version is that in our opinion, it trumps that of most other controllers manufactured by other companies.

There's no official info on the battery life, but users of the pad claim it lasts upwards of six hours on a single charge. That could be a very conservative estimate, however, as the Switch Pro Controller can easily last up to 40 hours before that battery is depleted. a b c d "Ultra 64 Controller" (PDF). Electronic Gaming Monthly. No.78. Sendai Publishing. January 1996. p.77. One game, Robotron 64, allows one player to use two controllers to control an avatar. This way, the game plays like its predecessor, Robotron 2084. Star Wars Episode I: Racer, GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark also use this set up for slightly different gameplay experiences (in terms of control, at least) compared to the standard single controller option. The controller also has vibration support and, much like the N64's Rumble Pak add-on, will work for certain N64 titles on Switch like Starfox 64. The functionality is a step above what we'd normally expect from these controller re-releases, but we're happy Nintendo went above and beyond to include one of the N64 controller's most unique features for its time.

The Brawler64 Wireless is a controller made for the N64 by Retro Fighters. We’ve been playing with this for months now and it’s one of the best N64 controllers for a good reason. If you weren’t impressed by the wireless functionality that the Brawler64 offers or you want a slightly different look and feel, this Hyperkin Admiral could be the selection for you.
