Joel Purnell Quartet - Peggy's Skylight - Nottingham

Joel Purnell is an internationally recognised and critically acclaimed saxophonist considered by many as one of the UK’s leading contemporary jazz musicians and educators. Described as “a tour de force” by Jazz UK, he first emerged onto the British jazz scene in the ‘90s, quickly developing a prominent reputation. Though a multi-instrumentalist equally at home on the Alto sax and EWI, Purnell is undoubtably best known as a Tenor player. With a style heavily influenced by both hard and post-bop players, he effortlessly blends a formidable virtuosity with an emotive sense of musical expression, creating a unique and instantly recognisable personal voice. Jazz UK commented, “this is how the contemporary tenor ought to sound”, while Jazzwise Magazine & The Guardian recount “fire breathing solos” conveyed with “immaculate taste”, that portray a style reminiscent of the legendary jazz saxophonists John Coltrane & Michael Brecker.Appearing for the first time at Peggy’s Skylight, Joel will be accompanied by an all-star rhythm section featuring the formidable bassist Zoltan Dekany, German guitarist Ulrich Elbract and Eryl Roberts on drums.
