This was the first James Bond hardback edition published by Penguin Books, who held the publishing rights to the series for a decade.

All Cape printings (the original publisher of the James Bond novels), the final three titles being first impressions. The critic for the New York Herald Tribune, conversely, wrote that "Mr Fleming is intensely observant, acutely literate and can turn a cliché into a silk purse with astute alchemy". Fleming's literary estate acquired the press the year before this publication, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the author's birth.
