About this deal

There’s a big twist in the book that I actually guessed for once, so I was happy as I never usually do guess them haha. TLDR: This second-chance romance was cute at times but fell flat for me due to the lack of emotional depth when Liv and Ransom reconnect after 14 years, which I think was a missed opportunity. Through nuanced character relationships that heighten the tension, Frick handily explores themes surrounding gender roles, loyalty, sexuality, and toxic masculinity in this cleverly layered mystery.

I’m not opposed to getting to know them, but a whole week together at an all-inclusive Caribbean resort with the rest of the Mayweathers is going to be a lot. That is until Thomas receives an invitation to a school reunion, with a sinister message scribbled on the back. I get the impression she’s used to being around a certain type of person at boarding school, and I’m not that type. There were so many cute details and things I loved from this books, along with Bre and Ford, Liv and Ransom’s best friends’.This propelled me through the last 80 pages, which still felt really derivative but in a more exciting way. The characters we’re interesting and distinct from each other, and I really enjoyed the different relationships, romantic, platonic, or otherwise. Yes, he and Maxime are in very real danger of having what they did in 1992 be exposed and come crashing down on them -- but that isn't even close to just the half of it. Emily had such a promising start at university, but the incident which forced her to abruptly leave has left a dark cloud hanging over her for her entire life.

The what-happened-to-Vinca resolution, and the why -- and the way several other people were involved in all that -- is beyond silly -- but amusingly enough so. Told in before and after timelines, we follow Emily throughout university, endure what she put up with and see the aftermath on how she plans to get her revenge.Emily had a difficult and traumatic time during her university days and has tried to move on from the past in many ways.

Now twenty years after the show's premier the cast has been signed on for a special reunion episode. The Reunion is I guess, a relatively entertaining read but ultimately it felt really derivative to me. I loved being able to see the characters from both timelines, including where their personalities and connections took them from college to the present day. A whispered word, the twinkling of an eye, or a lingering smile can raise us up or cast us into oblivion. In the following episodes we encounter a homicidal doctor, Russian gangsters, a bunch of crazed feminists yelling about the patriarchy, and some Sapphic snogging (well, it is French). I loved this one, the nostalgia, the celebrity romance, the second chance trope, the glitzy and not so glam side of Hollywood just made this such a fun and escapist romance. Smitten Thomas still is in the hold of that lost beauty who, he maintains: "was not your average teenage girl; she was sophisticated, vibrant, witty" -- though others will paint rather a different picture of her. Even adult Thomas doesn't seem to have learned much, as he rushes around non-stop (and into things, headlong), rarely taking the time to deliberate.

Guillaume Musso, one of the top three bestselling authors in France for years, is finally getting translated into English with The Reunion. Then an invitation to the 15th anniversary Cambridge University reunion provides the perfect opportunity for Emily to exact revenge for what happened to her – her anger has not dimmed with the passing of time and now she’s hell bent on bringing down those who she felt were the “architects of her downfall” – she wants someone to pay for what they have done. Ransom was headlined many box office smash hits as Liv chose a quieter route, pivoting to the world of low budget indie movies. I couldn’t get enough of Liv and Ransom’s off-screen chemistry and the interstitials that provide color commentary on the cast, crew, and show. The Reunion is told in alternating chapters, between the current day and the past (leading up to the current day), so each of the events and twists (and there are SO many twists! In addition, each character seems to be engaged in a sprint to be the least likeable, and are about neck-and-neck. Soon Mason needed glasses, and I didn’t, and by the time we were thirteen, we were barely recognizable as siblings. Kit Frick’s latest thriller is jam-packed with so much delicious drama, and will keep you guessing until the very end. Austin and Theo seem fine; I’ve only met them once, last month, when I came home from school and we all got together for Thanksgiving.
