I’ve actually talked about DTS Virtual:X before, but it’s basically a way of simulating surround sound without the need for actual surrounding speakers placed around you. Whether you want a soundbar as part of a wider audio setup or you just want to add a bit more energy to films, both LG and Samsung promise to enhance your favourite movies, TV and music with powerful, room-filling sound.

But it isn't all flagship models. LG's new entry-level TV speakers are typified by a more compact, all-in-one design that includes HDMI connectivity plus a softer, more home-decor friendly appearance. The SP2, for example, is billed as a 2.1-channel, 100W lifestyle soundbar with onboard subwoofers. It offers HDMI connectivity as well as Bluetooth,and comes in a choice of charcoal or grey. Lastly there are a few more features included that add more choice to the user. By including HDMI-CEC, LG Sound Sync and SIMPLINK if you have a TV that supports any of the above you can use your TV remote to issue some basic commands on the soundbar. This can be very practical in case you want to limit the amount of remotes on your room although for more specialized commands you will still need the soundbar remote or the supported app. I have no problems with easily recommending this soundbar, and feel like it’s actually impressive when you do first hear it.

Dialogue was pretty distinct even during busy action scenes and even without a dedicated center channel the SN5Y did a pretty good job at keeping dialogue clear without overlapping with the rest of the effects while it was isolated at the center in front of us. On paper, the 2021 flagship LG SP11R – a 7.1.4 channel,770W, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Meridian tuning offering –is LG's most impressive-looking new proposition, although considering its predecessor's asking fee we'd expect it to come with a similarly premium price tag. But to be fair, the focus should be on the sound so it doesn’t necessarily need to. That said, I still think it looks good. While the sound still technically comes from a single source, through algorithms, it’s able to stimulate the surround sound effect convincingly enough to where you feel like the sound field is all around you.

So with whatever you happen to be playing, the sound bar can automatically optimize the sound for that specific content on the fly, adjusting things like treble and bass for the best experience.Another, rather intriguing feature that we get is support for wireless rear speakers. Being a 2.1 channels soundbar, surround performance of the SN5Y is very limited as we will analyze a bit later in this review so having the ability to add extra surround speakers gives this unit amazing flexibility. This optional kit (SPK8-S) includes a receiver unit that can connecting wirelessly to the SN5Y and with simply pressing the sound tuning button for 3 seconds you can enable or disable the surround activity. It’s as simple as that. While there wasn’t a notated frequency for the subwoofer, I found it that it actually went surprisingly deep, at least to my ears, and definitely had some good impact when it came to the bass. If your TV doesn’t have an ARC slot like I mentioned before, then first take the optical cable and connect it into the soundbar. Then take the other side and connect it into the TV.

Its simple setup is great as a causal user, and the slim design means it’ll fit in your entertainment center. Samsung and LG both make soundbars that excel in our testing, and also ones that have been underwhelming. We also often find that paying more for a soundbar is no guarantee of more impressive sound. Ultimately, with LG and Samsung both having such a huge range of models, each brand has their standout soundbars and ones that disappoint, so you need to look carefully at the individual models to know for sure. We have reached the end of our review and what we can say is that the LG SN5Y is not all that different from its predecessor. It is a low end yearly release so things are pretty much the same without this being necessarily a bad thing. LG had an already good low end performer on their hands and this continues well into 2020.

The subwoofer added depth to the sound, making everything sound realistic and in your surroundings. It also features wireless surround sound ready, allowing you to add extra speakers to the setup for a more immersive experience. Sidenote, if you’re planning to use a receiver, and that receiver is already connected to your TV through ARC via HDMI, then connect the soundbar to an HDMI input on the receiver. It also boasts Dolby Atmos, DTS:Xand British hi-fi specialist Meridian Audio's Advanced Sound Technology enhancements – Bass and Space technology aims to boost low frequencies and widen the soundstage, while Image Elevation promises to raise the perceived height of vocals and instruments.
