About this deal

While the wording of both the descriptions and the interpretations is modern, the divinatory meanings are not radically different to traditional meanings so much as updated and appropriate to 21st-century living. The advice given has a generally positive outlook but does not shy away from the less pleasant issues that can arise in readings.

But the nuances of witchcraft are different for every witch. So, for an insight into the craft the world over, three women from Mexico, Japan and the US share why it’s one of the most inclusive practices of our times. Bere Parra, 39, Guanajuato City, Mexico Lisa Sterle beautifully merges traditional Rider-Waite symbolism with modern imagery. Every classic symbol and idea is on each card, and we can read them intuitively. Furthermore, because of the diversity of people on the cards, we are able to connect with Tarot on a deeper level. She also works with many kinds of Eastern and Western divination, including the I Ching (ancient Chinese text), tarot, feng shui and Four Pillars of Destiny (Chinese fortune telling). The Minor Arcana has no illustrations or descriptions, simply interpretations. Major and minor arcana have no reversed interpretations. Sterle uses a broad palette of solid colours that echo Pamela Coleman Smith's - bright blues and yellows, mustard and tan, candy pink, coral, and dove grey.Lisa Sterle is a Columbus, Ohio, artist who creates comics, concept art, and pop-culture illustrations. Her art is colorful, expressive, and often horror-tinged, combining her two favorite subjects, the beautiful and the macabre. End of book instructions for card care and storage, preparing for a reading, framing a question, and layout. The one-card draw, two 4-card layouts, The Hierophant is traditionally depicted by a male character in a Christian religious role. And while this version deviates with a female Hierophant key symbolic images remain:

I’m sure that at some moment in our lives, we all get to a point where ‘enough is enough’ and Lisa felt that she was at her lowest when she was reminded of ‘the ten of swords’– the tarot card signifying defeat and woe. It was at this point that Lisa began illustrating this very card, incorporating her modern ideas and flair for fashion within her work. She employs Waite-Smith imagery that has been modernized to fit 21st century reality. While some may regard it as comic book art, the pictures don’t have the monotonous uniformity of comics; each figure is distinctive, with minute elements characterizing their look and emotion.

Card Images from the Modern Witch Tarot

Each card of the Minor Arcana is illustrated and closely mirrors the representations in the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot, but of course with its own modern twist. The symbol for the minor arcana suits looks very familiar, but the illustrated scenes are fun to explore. Toward the end of the book instruction is given for the care and storage of cards, how to prepare for a reading, phrasing a question, and doing a layout. The Hierophant traditionally wears three layers of clothing to represent the conscious, the subconscious, and the super-conscious mind. The Modern Witch Hierophant wears a dress, a scarf, and a layer of tattoos, a beautiful interpretation of each layer, in my opinion. The Modern Witch Tarot is completely drawn and comprises of 78 cards plus 1 that the seeker may choose to include or exclude. The Major and Minor Arcana each have 22 cards.
