Askeladd now has Prince Canute, but he is hotly pursued by Thorkell and his men and sends for reinforcements. They reach the Bristol Channel, and are greeted by the Welsh general Gratianus with reinforcements from the Morgannwg kingdom. However, as they reach the kingdom of Brycheiniog, they are surrounded by archers on the hilltops.

Several characters are based on their real-life counterparts. The historical Leif Erikson is a famous Norseman; however, Yukimura imagined that he would have had a very weak nature as a warrior, so he instead fleshed Erikson out as a strong adventurer. In retrospect, Yukimura found that the series features prominently male characters, as the female ones die or are given little screen time. One of the few exceptions is Gudrid—she is based on a historical figure with the same name who made a major impact on the real Thorfinn's life, and Yukimura tries to be faithful to such an event. Meanwhile, the revengeful hunter Hild reminds Thorfinn of his sins as a Viking in the same way as in the start of the series, where Thorfinn sought revenge on Askeladd. As a child, Thorfinn sat at the feet of the great Leif Ericson and thrilled to wild tales of a land far to the west. But his youthful fantasies were shattered by a mercenary raid. Raised by the Vikings who murdered his family, Thorfinn became a terrifying warrior, forever seeking to kill the band’s leader, Askeladd, and avenge his father. Sustaining Thorfinn through his ordeal are his pride in his family and his dreams of a fertile westward land, a land without war or slavery…the land Leif called Vinland. The characters are very well made and believable in their motivations, every one of them with a interesting and complex story arc. The whole picture of the story is more complex and well made than expected, with a bigger scope on events than you could think of at a first glance, with a lot of surprises at hand. Okay so first of all based on the cover I thought that this was a more fun, family friendly adventure manga... don’t judge a book by it’s cover! While not particularly graphic or anything (this is a hard PG-13 or mild R) this is a gritty viking tale. I will admit I don’t know a pile about vikings (though know a bit) so while I may have missed some historical inaccuracies, this did seem fairly historically accurate based on what I know of vikings. Still, I feel that this choice is more adequate for this kind of exposition and going direct head in on a mission gets to be a better hook for the reader than the exposition of a familial life.

Marketed towards young teen males, you can see how this would appeal to that demographic as if it’s about a young boy who trains himself to be a warrior who fights forces that are bigger than him. However, author Makoto Tukimura is not telling a simple revenge story as he is using the big picture, which is the Danes’ war with the English. Although Thorfinn is the main character of this manga as he starts off as a naïve child who doesn’t know any better, it is his father Thors, who is arguably the protagonist of this volume.
