What's iffier: I'm not entirely sure of some of the claims made--the author is clearly utilizing comments from the press but isn't able to say anything to verify said comments. As Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait is due to be published imminently, here are five key points from published extracts from the book. However, she never lost her sense of humor, her love and compassion for others and the feeling that she was a servant leader.

Gyles Brandreth goes into great detail with information about the queen’s life and what she was really like as a person. He explains that it's not surprising her cause of death was ruled "old age," as that's the commonly listed cause "when a patient is over 80 and their doctor has cared for them over time and seen their gradual decline.Overall, a solid look into the life of Queen Elizabeth I and am overview of the British monarchy on the eve of Charles’ coronation. His many books include the bestselling poetry anthology, Dancing by the Light of the Moon, and the international bestseller about spelling and punctuation, Have You Eaten Grandma? So, for example, whether the Queen said "thank goodness" to the news of someone's absence from her husband's funeral--the author reports it and interprets what the Queen might have meant, but there doesn't appear to have been any investigation if the report was accurate. I would highly recommend this exceptionally well written book to anyone looking for an excellent biography on Queen Elizabeth.

And for a person who had no interest in watching THE CROWN because I knew the story, keeping me glued to this book is saying something. She told Brandreth she sometimes struggled to understand the plots and dialogue of the police drama. Delighted to welcome Meghan into the family, “the only concern the Queen let slip in the early days of the Sussexes’ marriage was to wonder to a friend if Harry wasn’t ‘perhaps a little over in love’”, according to Brandreth. But, as I say, she was immensely private - who could blame her - and so there isn’t a whole heap to go on.Her reaction to her health woes was that “she accepted this with all the good grace you’d expect”, Brandreth wrote. I also hate the slight digs at everyone who isn’t the queen, they just take away from the book and make me feel like I’m reading another tabloid article. Brandreth obviously had the opportunity to speak to many people who intimately knew the Queen, and this is definitely a book that could not have been published before her death.

Not being very well read on royals I felt that in reading the book, the warmth Gyles Brandreth feel for the Queen shines through throughout. The basic structure is chronological, but the author moves both forward and backward in history to draw parallels with other royals and historical events.

Far too much talk of Harry and Megan (who he obviously doesn't like), far too little mention of Prince William and Catherine. Old school himself, his book is peppered with quotations from people who knew her as well as occasionally her own words. I listened to the book on Audible as I love to hear Gyles speak and I knew it would enhance the experience and I was not disappointed. It was interesting to have the perspective of someone who was acquainted with Queen Elizabeth and her family. He has been London correspondent for “Up to the Minute” on CBS News and his books published in the United States include the New York Times best-seller, The Joy of Lex and, most recently, Philip Elizabeth: Portrait of a Royal Marriage. This is a bit of a painful review for me as I am a huge fan of Brandreth and interested in the Royal Family. I've read this book promptly because an awful lot of it I have read in the Philip a final portrait book.
