About this deal

A 'Special Edition' by Corgi Children's contains an introduction by Rob Wilkins and a look at how Terry Pratchett first imagined 'The Amazing Maurice.'

Of course, the one or other depth is there , but it´s easier to spot and understand and the whole work is like a concatenation of the mostly happy, light fantastic elements and actions, the language so smooth, the metaphors so fitting, everything just so perfect only a master like Pratchett could have been able to create. Clarke, Stewart (11 June 2019). "Terry Pratchett's 'The Amazing Maurice' to Be Turned into Animated Film (EXCLUSIVE)". Variety . Retrieved 5 December 2019. Here, Pratchett has crafted a clever parody of the Pied Piper of Hamelin story, with of course, some Discworld twists, turns, what haves you (not the Brothers Grimm but rather the Sisters Grimm). Channeling Orwell in Animal Farm and Daniel Keyes Flowers for Algernon, Pratchett has again returned to the ubiquitous phenomena of animals becoming sentient after living and eating in and around Unseen University. Seems the residual magic boosts the critter’s intelligence and provides a fecundity of fictional MAGIC for all us Discworld aficionados out here. Maurice the cat and his band of smart RATS have teamed up with Keith the teenage piper to swindle some Uberwald villages. Terry worked for many years as a journalist and press officer, writing in his spare time and publishing a number of novels, including his first Discworld novel, The Color of Magic, in 1983. In 1987, he turned to writing full time.Upon arriving in town, the group discovers that the people are convinced of a massive rat infestation, and have spent much of their savings on two rat catchers. Despite their efforts, food continues to disappear from the town.

Being able to talk doesn't make the rats that much like humans; they can't wear waistcoats, they instinctively eat their dead, mark things by widdling on them, and practically everything in the world is out to get them.Cats Are Superior: Oh, Maurice. The difference between cats and humans: humans think themselves the lords of creation, but cats know they are. Nor what happened to the eight blind keekees who were freed when Maurice bit through the tail-knot that merged them as Spider: did they regain their individuality, become comatose, or just drop dead? urn:lcp:amazingmauricehi0000prat:epub:ce7dae69-623e-4231-9bf9-05878c62393c Foldoutcount 0 Identifier amazingmauricehi0000prat Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t9d595s8c Invoice 1652 Isbn 0060012358

Malicia, the granddaughter and great neice of the Sisters Grim clearly "inherited the story telling talent". She is convinced that Maurice was probably owned by a witch who lived in a ginger bread cottage in the woods, (Hansel and Gretel from the Brothers Grimm) and that Keith must have been a prince left on a doorstep with a crown and a magical sword (reminiscent of the heir to the Kingdom of Lancre, Tomjon, left with the traveling theatre group as well as Captain Carrot, but also a very common theme in numerous fairy tales ( The Dancing Water, the Singing Apple, Thumbelina, the Speaking Bird), legends (Oedipus Rex, Excaliber) and bible stories (Moses found in the bullrushes). She claimed to have two evil step sisters (Cinderella) when she is really an only child.. It also shows what happens when an ingenious writer doesn´t just write for young audiences from the beginning of his career, but decides to give it a try after having written extremely complex and subtle fantastic comedy for adults over decades. It´s wonderful, it´s kind of even denser than the Discworld, because there are no longer introspections, dialogues, and philosophizing about ethics, morality, and the nature of good and evil, just easy fun and entertainment. The Pied Piper was one of my favorite fairy tales growing up. I'd feel sure that I wouldn't have been invited with the other kids to follow the music. Jesus, Mariel. (I liked the idea of everyone being gone way too much...) Pratchett has little respect in any of his novels for the bureaucratic wrangling of government and business. In this novel, the negotiations between the rats and the people of Bad Blintz to provide a permanent home for the rats in exchange for pest control become mired in endless committee meetings, resolutions, task forces, etc. which threaten the whole project. In The Last Hero, Pratchett refers to these kinds of "workshops" as a system "where people who don't know anything get together to pool their ignorance."Mission: Impossible" Cable Drop: Darktan performs this stunt to safely disarm a rat trap, suspended from bits of string.
