About this deal

Enjoy a scenicpint at the shores of Strangford Lough, the largest sea lough in the UK and Ireland and plan your adventure to its many mini islands. Several small natural loughs and rivers join the man-made dams of Silent Valley, Ben Crom and Spelga to add diversity to the landscape. It was built by the Belfast Water Commissioners between 1904 and 1922 to enclose the 9,000-acre catchment area of the Silent Valley Reservoir.

The 500m-high summit of Butter Mountain, the highest point of the route, lies just to the left, and provides fantastic views over the northwestern Mournes. Famed in song and close to the heart of everyone in the Province are the Mourne mountains and their hinterland. I carried 8 litres of water, which was a killer to carry up binnion, but glad I did given the heat on the day.The highest and most dramatic mountain range in Northern Ireland, there is no shortage of walks with fabulous views and breath-taking hills to climb in the Mourne Mountains, Co. Passing first through Spelga Reservoir and then through Lough Neagh, its 129km journey makes it the longest river in Northern Ireland. Occasional or patches, base 300 to 600m, mainly early in the day, mostly lifting and breaking above the summits.

Brunch and a well deserved rest at Meelmore Lodge charged the batteries for the final trek to Newcastle. As it did so, molton granite welled up in stages around the sides of the descending block and filled the 'roof cavity' left in its place. The Anglo-Norman invasion of 1177 and continued challenges by the Magennises encouraged the building and maintenance of castles in this area from the late 12th up to the 17th century. All provided by qualified and experienced International Mountain Leader and NWUK Nordic Walking Instructor.

Heritage Trail to the more challenging 10km Mountain Trail, you can pick and choose which walk to hit and space them out over different weekends if you like. Also, on your way around, keep an eye out for birdlife including tree-creepers, buzzards, hawks, dipper kingfisher and – rarest of all – the great spotted woodpecker. Continue straight along the river’s southern bank and cross the Shimna via a wooden footbridge some 500m further upstream. Continue descending along the Mourne Wall in a southerly direction where the Bog of Donard spreads out before you. Not only are there some savage views to be enjoyed from Slieve Meelmore and Slieve Meelbeg, you’ll be able to say you climbed two mountains in one day!Above 200m poor soils, low temperatures, high rainfall and a short growing season combine to produce a harsh climate for plant growth.
