I was going to construct a hidden bookcase door myself, but when I saw this kit I knew it would be much better than anything I could build. We used a piano hinge (Everbilt, 72″ x 2″ black continuous hinge) to fasten the two bookcases together.

You can omit the base of the BILLY bookcase completely to avoid the step up threshold but we left it in.
