About this deal

When sitting around set, waiting for the lighting professionals to make it just right, I'll turn to my fellow actors and say: "We're paid to wait. This is definitely invaluable material for anyone who wants to go into film (and in some ways theatre) from all aspects or anyone who’s every wanted a detailed idea of what a makes a film actor a professional. El principal punto por el que me gustó tanto este recorrido sobre el cine y la actuación es que no lo está diciendo un fulano cualquiera, lo está diciendo un ganador de la Academia, que no sólo ha incursionado en el teatro, sino también en la televisión y por supuesto, en el cine. He also states that it is his responsibility to fully engage the audience, to make them believe in him, not to see him as an actor speaking lines, but to see the character from the screenplay, he describes how he does this as an actor and his methods are interesting to read. This book is particularly helpful to actors who are crossing over from theater acting to film acting.

Most of the acting topics that are covered in the book are explained in more detail in the masterclass. Acting students attending auditions now might face a completely different landscape when it comes to auditions and getting parts.

Mr Caine knows exactly what he’s doing and his advice is the most helpful I’ve found so far on acting for the camera. He talks about entering sets where he only had one line to speak, waiting for hours to say that one line and that many stars on the film sets could be very arrogant and refused to talk to anyone below them. Biometric tests on cinema audiences, such as pulse rates, are used to advise the film companies on just how much viewers are immersed in the experience. Michael Caine teaches the art of movie acting to five young actors, who perform scenes from Alfie (1966), Deathtrap (1982) and Educating Rita (1983).

Four stars for the DVD because it does feel dated and just suddenly ends with a very 80s video advert for other films in the series. I questioned this with the seller and he - Gary from Quantum Leap - assured me there should be no problem. The beautiful partnership he had with Connery in Man Who Would Be King, and how they supported each other, made each other better, and made a better film.

So many things kept in the dark brought to light I never thought about in film acting and Caine’s stories, analogies, etc.

I bought it for my 15 year old and expected him to say it it was dated - and, sure, it is - but the little tips and tricks that Caine delivers to his young student actors (including a young and posh Celia Imrie) are exquisite. Rather than try explaining everything with endless details, Michael Caine just gives it to the reader plain and simple, which is the reason why i truly appreciate this book. I studied theater first and jumped into acting in two feature films without formal film acting training. The film world allows the viewer to feel a heightened sense of excitement and participation with the fictional characters. This is a rather fascinating hour long documentary where Michael Caine teaches a small group of students how much different it is to act for the camera, as opposed to a live audience. Extremely valuable guidance if you want to get some tips from someone with more working knowledge of the business than almost anyone else around. In the 1960's there was a huge cultural change between the social classes and it was not unusual to see some actors getting big breaks without having gone to acting school, Some were members of local acting classes but had never studied the art of acting. Please, if you are thinking about starting an acting career or are simply looking for a book to expand your knowledge about the business, then DO consider adding this one to your list. This book is easy to read and full of interesting information about acting, the film world and technical information as well as personal stories by Michael Caine.
