About this deal

Long Way Down is a powerful young adult novel that explores violence in the lives of these young black men. Uncle Mark tries to walk Will through his plan step-by-step and Will finds he can't get past the part where he pulls out the gun. When the elevator finally reaches the ground floor, Will is left with the final decision of whether or not to continue with his plan to seek revenge or to take a different path and help end the cycle of violence. To my mess of a brain, if poetry doesn't rhyme or have a prominent rhythm or pattern, it just seems that the enter key was pressed in random places.

You know when you haven’t fully grasped the story they way you would have wanted to because you’re reading too fast and you just know that there are underlying gems that you are missing out on, but you can’t stop reading? The book was longlisted for the National Book Award [1] and was named a Printz Honor Book, Coretta Scott King Honor Book, and Newbery Medal Honor Book, [2] alongside other awards and positive reviews. It gave readers plenty of room to think and reflect on the novel as a whole, while still managing to remain a satisfying conclusion. Reynolds' decision to leave the story open-ended is a stylistic choice that allows the reader to evaluate all the facts given and interpret what they believe the final outcome will be. Sara has extensive knowledge in teaching literacy skills to struggling students and students who speak another language. The layered, fragmented layouts found across many spreads have potent impact, along with stylistic touches such as Polaroid photos, video screens, and storyboards seamlessly substituted for panels. This hard-hitting tale, based on an award-winning novel in verse by Jason Reynolds, is very much enhanced and accessible in graphic novel format. For readers who perhaps don’t find reading that fascinating or find it difficult discover books that reflect their surroundings, because there is so little of it. Although paced extremely well, it was such a quick read that I didn't have time to properly digest what I was reading.

I haven't charted out my visits for the summer term, but I'm sure there are several in the south) and thanks so much for being so fantastic! Furthermore, as we travel down with Will, he contemplates his journey, both this one, and those taken by Shawn and others, just like him, obeying the rules. As I have already mentioned, this book is a quick read, but the emotional impact it has, is phenomenal. Perspective and Reality - In the book, Will is visited by ghosts from his past who hope to impart insight into Will's future before he makes his final decision. Those individuals who came from households and grew up surrounded by gangs, gun violence and grief and who have all been painted with the same brush in the media. As Will listens to his mother's sobs at home, he opens the middle drawer of Shawn's dresser, previously forbidden territory, and finds a gun. I don’t tolerate self-absorbed people who go out of their way commenting on my review because they think theirs is the only right opinion.

While he might feel self-righteous and justified following the "rules" and honoring his brother's memory, he is also conflicted, and impacted by the visitors who meet him in the elevator along the way down. Most of the ghosts' stories revolve around that third rule, wherein one person died because they killed someone who killed someone connected to their family, creating a continuous cycle of hurt.

Your selection was perfect for our children and what really made the difference was your ability to engage with each child, discuss their interests and help them to choose a suitable book based on your extensive knowledge of the books you were selling. This was a powerful and unique book , but the reason I’m giving it 3 stars is because it somehow missed the mark for me.

I had trouble visualizing the setting for some reason, the writing style in verse lacked something for me. I did enjoy the way the author narrates the audiobook, but it was too fast for me to get attached to the story or the characters. My only complaint was that, while the events were hard to stomach, things moved so quickly and with so little development or preamble that, by the time I felt attached to Will or his pain, I was turning the last few pages. From Nobel Laureates Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter to theatre greats Tom Stoppard and Alan Bennett to rising stars Polly Stenham and Florian Zeller, Faber Drama presents the very best theatre has to offer. I’ve always loved stories written in verse, so when I heard about this own-voice tale of the struggles that toxic masculinity and systemic racism place upon young black men, I was immediately interested. Ellen Hopkins’ use of verse and poetry is dead and Jason Reynolds killed it, personally, by himself.
