About this deal

Because really, eleven-year-olds don’t ordinarily snort lines of coke in the bathrooms at Studio 54 if they’re being supervised. update: I re-read this immediately after reading Wildflower, and found it interesting to compare the two versions of some items that came up in both books - and also how Drew characterized her time in the hospital in Wildflower. Her writing is constantly interrupted by by Todd Gold, whose input, in my opinion should be shorter and be in footnotes at the bottom of the page.

Drew Barrymore’s legal emancipation from her mother at age 14, her self-driven ‘rebranding’ as teen-seductress, and her multiple engagements and three short marriages were still to come. Her mom wanted to be an actress, but since that didn't really work out, she sort of but not really pushed her daughter into it. But the love, respect and adoration of wonderful people never could fill the bitter and empty void Drew suffered where family belonged. If you choose to read this book, good luck, keep a Kleenex handy and above all, if you're a parent, realize the power and responsibility you've been given. Drew is offering advice to young actresses entering rehab these days: ""If you don't pull it together for yourself, no one else will," she says in the March issue of Vogue. While I’m sure the book might’ve been written a little better had she been older when she wrote it, it was interesting to get a glimpse into her life not long after the start of her battle with drugs and alcohol. First, about the physical book, it arrived promptly, in "good condition" and as described, clean, without markings or highlighting, no missing pages or broken spine. If you loved "Carol", the loveable little pain-in-the butt thirteen year old in American Graffiti, her story (written decades later as an adult) is "High on Arrival" by Laura Mackenzie Phillips and is available. I mean, we all know she gets clean because she is like rockin' right now, but between like her bottom out days and like Never Been Kissed and Ever After, which were like her "come back" movies, what happened in between? Read this as a teen and I should have taken it as a cautionary tale and learned and not repeated her mistakes.

She made it though and in by 16 had cleaned up her life, to go on to a string of successes in a series comedies and dramas . Drew, as she says, will live the rest of her life on the brink of disaster, from minute to minute and hour to hour. Of a day out with Cameron Diaz she says – “When we arrived at the school we were met by a bunch of dudes. He was recognized for his newsbreaking exclusives with Michael Jackson, Madonna, Barbra Streisand, Robert Redford, Michael J. She is a descendant of the Barrymore family of well-known American stage and cinema actors, and is a granddaughter of actor John Barrymore.

She also tells of her work on movies such as Firestarter, Irreconcilable Differences,Babes in Toyland and Far From Home. Not to mention the added attention that was mostly negative from her peers at school because of her success. this has given me a little bit of hope that even though I'm not there yet, and it will take me a long, long time to be 'there', people can come through things like this. So it's no wonder a kid with a family history of depression, alcohol and drug abuse would turn to self-medicating at such a young age. There's not a lot of sugar-coating here, and the addition of her relapse after she wrote what she thought was the last chapter showed just how difficult addiction can be to beat. The story is complex and there is the mothers point of view, the findings in her own therapy, dozens of details and quotes from Drews therapists and other observations that do deserve to be included to establish timelines and round out the story. It is a sad story of a child whose life was marred by what no child should go through, but who overcame her self-destructive habits and proved those who said she was burned out at 13, so wrong.

She envisioned a happy ending with victory and promise, after the months of hard work and intense therapy during her hospitalization. For some reason Jaid Barrymore thought it a good idea to let a 9-year-old, albeit a precocious one, accompany her to clubs and gave her more social freedom than most parents (including mine) allow for teenagers.

The formatting alternates between writings from Drew, interviews with her mom and additional narrative provided by someone else. I guess I can relate to this more than a 'oh my, this is a tragic story', I can relate because I have struggled with the same issues Drew has for as long as I can remember. Drew Pinsky, Burt Reynolds, Richard Pryor, Louie Anderson, Belinda Carlisle, Sharon Rocha, and Elisabeth Kübler Ross. I read this after watching one of her movies and finding out she was the same girl as in ET all those years before.
