About this deal

The series follows Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen) attempting to catch criminals that are taking advantage of the confusion created by the Second Word War.

With this constant threat as a backdrop, plus having to deal with political interference and prioritisation of the military, Foyle quietly goes about doing what he does best: solving murders.

In March 2007, UK and US distributor Acorn Media began re-releasing series 1–3 as four-disc DVDs for the UK (as they had in the US) and labelling them with series numbers. As the stories of DCS Foyle progress through the War, in the final two series we find ourselves in a time of peace at last.

But a new kind of war is beginning, one much darker and indistinct than the first; a war that doesn’t officially exist – a Cold War. No longer needed as a police driver, Sam has also found new employment -although she's being very reluctant to tell people what the new job involves. Set in a quiet English coastal town during WWII and in London during the Cold War's early days, rich in moral complexity and period details, it revolves around Kitchen, who can "communicate volumes with the tilt of his head and arch of his eyebrow in response to a suspect's lies" ( New York Times). This forced Horowitz to discard scripts set during most of 1943 and 1944, resulting in time jumps of nine months to a year between episodes; previous series had gaps of a month at most. But a new kind of war is beginning, one much darker and indistinct than the first; a war that doesn't officially exist: a Cold War. Certain items can take longer to source than the estimated week, particularly during busy trading periods and may take longer to arrive at our warehouse. In a newspaper article and an interview accompanying the series-one DVD set, Horowitz explained that he was seeking a name which evoked the early 1940s.

The quietly enigmatic Foyle would much rather serve his country in the armed forces, but his superiors deem him indispensable for combating the heightening anarchy along England's south coast, where the German army is expected any day. Season 1 episodes are: 'The German Woman', 'The White Feather', 'A Lesson in Murder' and 'Eagle Day'. The series is also notable for its attention to historical detail, and the drama is frequently moved along by historical events of the Second World War.Set during the time from just before England entered WWII until shortly after the war ended, it seems to keep to an accurate time line of the war while following DCS Foyle through a variety of crimes, both war related and otherwise. Throughout the series, he is assisted by his driver, Samantha "Sam" Stewart ( Honeysuckle Weeks), and Detective Sergeant Paul Milner ( Anthony Howell). Each episode runs for 90 to 100 minutes, filling a two-hour time slot on ITV when commercials are included. Honeysuckle Weeks is an inspired choice as Foyle's sidekick, a clergyman's daughter posted from the Women's Royal Army Corps to serve as his driver, and she plays the part with an admirable period style. Foyle's War opens in southern England in the year 1940 - which may seem a strangely remote period in which to place a new detective, but the setting turns out to be a means of adding moral and dramatic depth to the storylines.
