About this deal

Thankfully Granny Weatherwax, the Discworld’s most famous witch, has plenty of experience ignoring the status quo. This is one of my favourite Terry Pratchet stories and I was glad that it was so well read by the reader.

For a long while, Esk would make no other appearances nor have mentions in any further novels until I Shall Wear Midnight, wherein she assists Tiffany Aching in hiding from the Cunning Man, I initially bought this book to read while I was on holiday and could not put it down the entire time I was away. A non-Discworld book, Good Omens, his 1990 collaboration with Neil Gaiman, has been a longtime bestseller, and was reissued in hardcover by William Morrow in early 2006 (it is also available as a mass market paperback (Harper Torch, 2006) and trade paperback (Harper Paperbacks, 2006). It's a heart-warming book focusing on the Man Jobs and Women Jobs of the Discworld-and indeed our own.The new day doesn't erupt, it sort of sloshes gently across the sleeping landscape in the same way that the tide sneaks in across the beach, melting the sandcastles of the night. But power is unpredictable, and these bright young students soon find themselves in a whole new dimension of trouble. For once the sky was clear, the high Ramtops standing out crisp and white like brides of the sky with their trousseaux stuffed with thunderstorms. Granny Weatherwax, what more needs to be said for one of the cornerstones of the Discworld who makes her first appearance in Equal Rites. This book is our first encounter with Granny Weatherwax, whom I knew from the Tiffany Aching books (my intro to Discworld).

With the help of Granny Weatherwax and Archchancellor Cutangle, who have retrieved the staff, they both manage to transport themselves back into the Discworld. In a man’s world of magic, young Eskarina must fight for her right to become a student of magic at Ankh-Morpork’s ancient college of wizardy.

Whilst I don't remember ever actually reading this book it was wonderful to get reacquainted with Granny W. premises of a respectable dealer in stolen property because, as Granny had heard, good fences make good neighbours. Similar in spirit to the first two books in the Discworld series, once again we have a delightful duo on a journey, encountering many a merry mishap on the way.Infused with the spirit of second-wave feminism (as told by a well-meaning white man), it tells the story of a young girl who is destined to become a wizard, much to the concern of both witches and wizards alike.
