About this deal

Though the explanations are clear, I found I got more from this this time as I am more receptive now to the chapters that have more of an encyclopaedic feel. I found this helpful to help me continue to get a handle on how this vast subject is connected to Ancient History and Human History; as I was listening to it I had so many moments where small scraps made a few more things a little bit clearer for me.

Primeiro pensei lê-lo como preparação para o curso, depois imaginei que lhe daria uso obrigatório na licenciatura, e a dada altura percebi que, até aos dias de hoje, nunca terminei um livro que fosse forçada a ler. This story, along with a few others, got me wondering why no one has created any horror adaptations of the Greek Myths.I have this now on Kindle, I come across this book constantly referenced in other books, so got my own copy. I was pleased to see the Volsungasaga included, since it is so often replaced by the Nibelungenlied (the Germanic version of Sigfried and his messed up love life), but then as I read it I found to my dismay: "The story of Siegfried is so familiar that that of his Norse prototype Sigurd can be briefly told. The book has thick hard cover, with thick quality pages, beautiful strong colour plates and stitch binding.

The beginning starts with a great essay describing the impact of these mythologies and then talks about major Gods before telling us the stories. This book has been on the required reading list of so many schools that nearly everyone has seen it, owned it, and opened it at least twice. Then I got to college, and took an actual mythology class, and the first thing the professor said was, "I hope you all haven't been reading junk like Edith Hamilton. Hamilton, while not indulging in graphic details, does not shy away from some of the harsher aspects of these stories and I found myself making faces while listening. What stood out for me in this audiobook was the transparency of its sources as it retold the Greek myths. The truth is, she could’ve excluded the final 20 pages and sold this solely as ‘Greek Mythology’ and I may have given it 5 stars. One could add many more but overall in this book one can see clearly the basis of a civilisation that was destined to become great and provide Europe with its mind and soul.
