About this deal

I enjoyed learning about the lives of roe deer, but would have liked to have learned more about the author’s thoughts and motivations. Delorme attributes feelings to his friends as he witnesses their various experiences and it is these, their emotional responses to life alongside their curiosity, that most encourages the reader to see the roe deer as persons. Decidedly unsettled by this turn of events, the men packed up their gear and began to retreat to their vehicle when a sudden rustling in the long grass caused them to bring their rifles to bear.

Some of the photos, which are undoubtedly beautiful, seemed to be plonked into the book at random moments and not ones relating to the story itself. Struggling under the weight of the human world's expectations, he left civilization behind at 19 to live among them for seven years. Humans are nature too and self-righteousness isn’t the best way to go about reminding others of that, imo.

A few moments later, visibly weakened, she struggles up again, her whole body trembling, takes a step forward, and then stops. This enigmatic novella coolly observes a single woman, Claire, whose lover, Thomas, claims to have a wife and two children.

The celebrated naturalist Richard Mabey has long railed against the impulse to use other animals as “some kind of mirror”.

He got to know their habits, their personalities, and recounts their struggles to survive in a world that is increasingly encroaching upon them. For nature enthusiasts, conservation activists, animal lovers, and fans of books like Hermit In The Woods, Woodswoman, Untamed, or the memoirs of Jane Goodall and Diana Fossey, I HIGHLY recommend this book! Many, like Foster, who try to do this acknowledge that we need a disruption of power relations across the living world. After reading it, I'll never look at deer the same, although I've lived among them in urban areas and in the wild where I knew them and their families as individuals. In concise and sober fashion, German historian Steinbacher traces the history of Auschwitz from a medieval trading town to the major extermination camp of the Holocaust.

He said a couple of times that he didn’t want to anthropomorphise the deer, but continued to do so (“she was proud” etc) which I found slightly annoying. It is hard being a human sometimes and for some, the only life that feels genuine can be a "wild" one outdoors.
