About this deal

This novel had all that I could want but it took me a really long time to connect with these characters. If I keep it to myself and truly lose my shit, they may not realize it fast enough to save themselves. Barnes ably conjures the kind of haunting setting and atmosphere required for this Event Horizon-esque novel… Recommended for fans of claustrophobic space horror.

His work has been nominated to the Bram Stoker and Locus Awards and won the Wonderland Book Award for Best Novel in 2019. Barnes ably conjures the kind of haunting setting and atmosphere required for this Event Horizon-esque novel, providing an effective sense of immediacy to Claire's frequently shifting and at times tenuous grip on reality. So with that in mind, going in I always feel like there are two rather predictable routes the book can take. Titanic meets Event Horizon in this SF horror novel in which a woman and her crew board a decades-lost luxury cruiser and find the wreckage of a nightmare that hasn't yet ended. The novel follows Claire, a team leader who worked aboard a Verux repair ship servicing communication beacons in the outermost regions of explored space alongside her crewmates Voller, Kane, Lourdes, and Nysus. Torn between her desire to lead a normal life and the pressure from the Center to continue her work tracking down killers, Violet’s world starts to unravel…and some of her most carefully guarded secrets are exposed. Reed is incredulous, as he is intent on forcing Claire to confess to murdering her crew out of greed.

A lot of things are going on, but the one we worry about the most for the first half of the novel is Claire’s psyche. A. Barnes a 1/5 as even the ending was lame as it kind of gives everything away in the beginning to then have an annoying chapter format to explain what happened in the past with what’s going on currently. This extreme bi-polar captain was such a broken character, the love story was so painful to listen to, I just couldn't take it anymore.

Some parts are absolutely terrifying, but the book eventually settles into a very intriguing thriller, with the suspense keeping you hooked until the last page. team leader claire kovalik, our unreliable narrator with a tragic backstory, is not looking forward to this transition at all, so when the opportunity to prolong the mission presents itself, she digs in despite the protestations of some of the members of her crew. There were certain elements of the story that I wish had been different or handled another way, but overall I had a good time with the book. It provided an intriguing mystery as well as suspense and tons of gory action, and what more could you ask from a space horror book?

Footage discovered from a reality show filmed aboard the Aurora showed that the deceased had experienced visual and auditory hallucinations, as well as paranoia. Gabino Iglesias reviewed the novel for Locus, praising it for its atmosphere, setting, and for "simultaneously exploring the role that past trauma and PTSD can play when someone who suffers from them is exposed to fresh trauma. For one thing, we lost much of the momentum as the pace ground to a halt during this transition, and recovery was impossible as things never felt quite the same again.Dead Silence mixes horror, mystery and sci-fi into a thrill ride sure to shock you out of your reading rut.
