About this deal

I was in awe of her journey at every point, feeling like I really understood what she was experiencing, but in disbelief a human can achieve what she did! Unlike other trekking accounts, Graham's is more like a memoir detailing how she came to attempt this record.

She does talk about her relationships with family and friends, but the real people aspect of this book is her interactions with those from other countries and cultures. Aber sie wollte die schnellste Frau werden und sie wollte auf ihrer Fahrt ohne fremde Hilfe auskommen. Biking books never stimulated sweaty palms until I read Jenny Graham's Coffee First, Then the World . Each day includes locations, sleeping conditions and distance stats, followed by a commentary from Jenny. The pros and cons of this are conveyed well in the book, as are the strategies and coping mechanisms that Jenny rolled out with, and developed over time. I’m not one for getting overly gushy about bikes, but as I lay on the cool, unfamiliar white sheets, I appeared to be talking to mine.

Auf dem Papier geht die Rechnung auf: Jenny muss jeden Tag eine bestimmte Menge an Kilometern fahren. She has also developed an addiction to touring, with destinations including Iceland, Georgia and Albania, to mention just a few. Having had a cycling adventure only slightly less epic than Jenny's I had been looking forward to hearing her account of her record breaking ride; and I was not disappointed! She has travelled the world racing and touring in grass roots back-packing events and continues explorations with her role as a presenter on Global Cycling Network's documentary channel. Her journey swerves from terrifying near road collisions in Russia and weather extremes in Australia to breathtaking landscapes in Mongolia and exhilarating wildlife encounters in North America.

I was introduced to Literary agent James Spackman, who is a cycling enthusiast so we spoke the same language. It launches next week and Jenny is also doing a book tour, starting on 12th April, with talks (and rides) happening at various locations across the UK. On the other hand, it's definitely possible to sense when she is riding through impressive landscapes or witnessing a natural spectacle; things slow down just a little and her writing becomes more descriptive. I loved Jenny's focus on other people and her surroundings, her succinct, yet super engaging style that was flowing wonderfully.

I guess that's why she is touring off the back of its publication, to talk more about her adventure (as she finds that more enjoyable than writing about them). Submitting to extreme efforts for 124 days 10 hours and 50 minutes, she preferred riding into the wee hours past midnight throughout her trip. You don't have to be gloriously happy in a storm, but accepting it is what makes for an easier passage', and, 'There is a freedom that comes from carrying your own home with you. The goal is always at the forefront of her mind, and no minor detours will keep her from achieving it.The issue was temporarily fixed, but it had just triggered every single fear and internal battle I’d had with myself about my ability to actually pull this off. My writing experience up to that point was nothing more than some blog and Instagram posts – even then I’d often overthink, mis-spell and use emojis to fill in the connecting bits.

Even though the Guinness Book of World Records does not distinguish the difference, she is attempting this feat in an unsupported fashion. The physical benefits of training are easy to measure, but it’s only in times of resistance that you will see the resilience you have built up mentally to adverse situations. Sehr sympa geschrieben, flüssig zu lesen, auch wenn man im Laufe des Buches immer öfter den Kopf schüttelt über "die verrückte Schottin", während sie immer schwächer und müder wird. She recounts the misery of mid-winter in the Southern Hemisphere, alarming encounters with kangaroos, grizzly bears and countless others.Soon after competing for GB in the World Age Group Triathlon Championships in Edmonton in 2001 she saw the light and decided to focus on cycling. If Jenny had lived 1000 years ago she would be the patron-saint of "getting it done no matter what".
