Frances is the main character, however, her family is also mentioned in the book as well as her friends at school.she is a very picky eater and refuses to eat anything else but bread and jam no matter what her mom offers her. Faced with no alternative Frances comes to the conclusion that although she loves bread and jam she does not want to eat it at every meal.
