About this deal

Likewise, there are discussions of real-world resistors of various types, including digital potentiometers. Theory is on target, just enough to be enough, described in plain language, expressed in math that everyone can grasp. Go for an easier one to start with, such as Practical Electronics for Inventors, book 4, and Learning the Art of Electronics then drift into this superb volume. Sure, if you’ve studied another field of engineering, you could probably pick up a copy and start running, but for the true beginner without any engineering experience, you would probably want to start elsewhere and refer to AoE for more advanced discussions — sound off in the comments with beginner book recommendations if you have them. For someone closer to beginner like me what is that book that looks like it’s printed on graph paper, Electronics Notebook or something?

I never heard of the book until the age of the popular internet, maybe 1996, but then it seemed referenced “everywhere”, I always assumed because many had it as a university text book. The 2001 pressing of the second edition ( ISBN 0521370957) lists "Reprinted 1990 (twice), 1991, 1993, 1994 (twice), 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 (twice), 1999, 2001".He is the author of some 200 scientific articles and reports, has consulted widely for industry and government, and is the designer of numerous electronic and photographic instruments. I highly recommend for the hobbyist, but beware highlighting, just slip some copy paper between pages before to prevent bleed through. They have also included a section on bus converters: bi-directional DC converters, which can convert from one voltage to another, say 12V down to 5V, but also work in reverse, transparently. Having documented my attempts at this in these very pages, I can really appreciate the care and detail that went into the treatment of this subject in the x-Chapters. The Art of Electronics brilliantly conveys its authors' enthusiasm and experience of practical engineering and is an inspiring read.

Widely accepted as the authoritative text and reference on electronic circuit design, both analog and digital, this book revolutionized the teaching of electronics by emphasizing the methods actually used by circuit designers a combination of some basic laws, rules of thumb, and a large bag of tricks. There are further excursions into lands less traveled, like the discussion of a two-terminal negative resistance made from BJTs, another obscure subject close to my heart. is particularly interesting, covering mechanical switches and relays, components that we sometimes forget have non-ideal characteristics. Chapter 5 details every circuit artifact that I've encountered in the past thirty years in a through, pragmatic, and straightforward way. This makes the book far more accessible than one might expect from a Harvard professor - think of Paul Horowitz as the Richard Feynman of electronics. The new Art of Electronics retains the feeling of informality and easy access that helped make the first edition so successful and popular. I really like the fact that 'modern' components are referenced throughout the example circuits/theory descriptions, making the whole learning experience seem much more grounded in reality. As if gripped by an unseen force I found myself accumulating various components and sticking them to circuit boards with molten solder.
