About this deal

Karina and Malik meets during the Solstasia and they fall in love with each other but each of them struggles with their individual intentions. The world-building is not so different from many other books I have read (but that's what happens after a while when you read so many YA and fantasy novels I guess) and the magic was subtly weaved into it.

When her mother, the Sultana is assassinated, Karina does not want to carry the burden of rulings and looks for a way to resurrect her mother for which will involve dark magic and a human sacrifice. Malik and his sisters are poor refugees from the Eshra Mountains who are heading to Ziran to find a job.loved both our main characters as the book alternates perspectives between Malik (our soft boy) and Karina (our determined fierce girl). Brown has admitted to using Ghanaian folk tales as an inspiration for her book, this story isn’t really a fairy tale or folk tale retelling.

I was shocked by the connections that were made that I didn't necessarily see coming in the beginning of the novel. I was so excited when this book came out that I bought it immediately on release day, and y’all, I have no regrets. Ebooks fulfilled through Glose cannot be printed, downloaded as PDF, or read in other digital readers (like Kindle or Nook). He's nervous, awkward, quick to cry, shy around new people, uncertain of his powers, lacking in self-worth - and though he constantly stumbles, he never stops getting back up and fighting.

Malik and his 2 sisters are fleeing their dangerous homeland and are hoping to find a job in the capital city, but when Malik's younger sister is captured by a magical being, their plan changes. She also makes sure to highlight internal issues that the protagonists face like anxiety and panic attacks, and it’s especially important to see that softness and vulnerability in a male lead. Since they’re also complex teenagers dealing with mental illnesses, trauma, and high-stress environments, I could hardly blame them for moments of irrationality.

Malik sees red and shoves Driss, who falls so hard that he tumbles over the banister and dies just as Tunde and soldiers arrive. The maze challenges them with their greatest fears, and Malik has to deal with his childhood trauma and anxieties head on, but he comes out stronger. The second challenge is essentially a talent show that revolves around doing a performance based off of a random item drawn from a box. i honestly don’t know how to feel, i don’t want to rate this book until i get my thoughts straight because i really was forcing myself to read this book and i feel like it would be unfair to the author. I know it's supposed to be part of how she deals with her trauma, but it didn't read that way--she's supposedly really smart, but also lazy, and she always seems to get lucky when she messes up, and it just didn't work for me.

That I felt like the marketing for this book was genuinely dishonest and told a lot of possible fans what they wanted to hear instead of what the content of the book actually is. Without knowing it, Karina and Malik are set on a collision path, each determined to kill the other. The only way Malik can get her back is by killing the princess of Ziran, Karina, before the end of Solstasia. Malik and his older sister Leila and younger sister Nadia arrive at the gates of the city-state Ziran after traveling a long way through a dangerous desert. But as soon as Karina sees her eyes, she knows that it could never have worked and that this being isn’t truly her sister, though it looks and sounds just like her. Depicted in this necropolis are images of the Faceless King, who is shown here with a face and Malik recognizes him as Idir, though none of this is revealed to Karina at this time.
