I especially found Poppy’s realizations that forgiveness is easy but acceptance is hard because it means that you’ve come to understand the other person’s actions to be very deep, and there’s a level of maturity that we see from the characters through the pages of these stories. I could go on and on about every reason I loved this book and thoroughly enjoyed it, but I would undoubtedly start spilling spoilers, so I’m going to cut myself off here.
She is woken by a large crack, and a glowing sky–Orphine tells her to not go outside, but Sera goes onto the balcony and is immediately choked by the smoke-filled air. They provided comic relief and heart-melting moments, and seeing Nyktos and Nektas interact with them was just swoon-worthy (I mean, who doesn’t like a sexy man with a caring daddy vibe? I was screaming (on the inside) and pleading that whatever it was Sera walked in on was NOT at all what she truly believed. Good old miscommunication will do that, but after a while, it became repetitive, and Sera’s inner monologues about her feelings were always the same.Nyktos takes a look at her injury and tells her that it’s not a bad wound so she doesn’t need his blood and so there’s no worry of him taking advantage of her. The two of them step out into the chaos of the fight, after Orphine agrees to protect Sera, and they continue fighting against the draken. Ash tries to get the Dakkais to him, but the whole place is swarmed with the Cimmerian and the Dakkais. On their way back to the Shadowlands, they argue, and Ash tells Seraphena that he would’ve loved her if he could’ve–that her life means something, so he cannot kill her. October is exiting stage left, and November is entering stage right leaving us ready to cozy up with some amazing books this month.
The following day, Nyktos rides with Sera to the entrance to the Vale, and lets her enter with Nektas. Even though I was a little annoyed near the end by Sera’s unending inner talks about her feelings for Nyktos, I still like her as the main character. Nyktos tells her that he means every word of it, and she suddenly feels like she could be more than a vessel for the embers.Sera is shocked to find out that she is Sotoria, the mortal at the center of Kolis’ obsession that started all of this, and tries to come to terms with it. Nyktos catches up with her, and they get into another argument, during which Sera spits out that she was actually trying to save him. I had high hopes for ALITF because I immediately fell in love with Sera and Nyktos in ASITE and devoured that book in one sitting.
